Help Google Play Using 83% of Battery Since System Update

I don't remember previously seeing an app called Google Play when checking my Battery stats on my Verizon LG2. But it's there now, and it's always at the very top of the battery usage list. It regularly is using 80% or more of the battery. And battery life has suffered. My Android version is 4.4.2, and the recent update to the latest build was VS98027A. When I stop it in Battery Use, it just starts up again at the 80%+ level. I have not rooted this phone... it's seemed so good without rooting, I never bothered.

I see that Google App appears in my downloaded apps in the Application Manager in Settings. I also see that it can be stopped, have updates uninstalled, or disabled. I haven't done any of this yet. Is it safe to do this? Can someone tell me exactly what Google App does?

Thanks!

OK... I think I answered my own question. I went ahead and uninstalled Google Play updates, and then disabled the app. I found out it's the old (?) Google Search, as Google Search (OK Google, etc.) no longer worked. So I enabled it, but did not install the updates. I no longer see it in battery usage. But perhaps it's too early to tell. I'll avoid the updates when I can, and I'll watch for the battery usage. If there is a significant change after a while, I'll report it here for anyone who might be interested. I still don't understand why the updated version was hogging the battery.

I noticed the same thing and tracked it down to something regarding voice sensor. I figured that had to be the "ok google" from any screen setting which I did have enabled so I disabled that and it's been better ever since. What it is about the new update I have no idea. I had that enabled previously with no problems.

Perhaps it's just a "snafu" with the update, and hopefully it'll be fine now. Kinda funny... I said the app was hurting my battery life. Even so, battery life was still much better than any other phone I've used! :D Thank you for the reply!

Haha yeah very true, I could still easily make it through the whole day but the wakelocks were very high so it was clearly dragging it down.
