Google push an update to Nexus s

Can you get google to push an update to your nexus s. My Nexus is running 2.3.4 and I want the newest update but I keep checking and nothing is there. Sure Wish I could get the new one 2.3.4 has battery issues, so I need something that manages the battery better.

Who's your carrier? I am on Tmobile and received the 2.3.6 update shortly after it was released. Try going into Settings -> About Phone -> System Updates.

I tried the system update in settings but it says my phone is all up to date. I just brought it 2 days ago would that have anything to do with it? Oh and the carrier is At&t.

Well when I first got mine, it took a few days for me to get the update. It's because you only just bought it.

So does anyone have ideas of about how long I should keep the phone and it not have OTA update before I take it back. I know it should take a few days, but I don't want to wait to long and something be wrong with the phone and not be able to take it back.

Why take it back because of that? Anyway, it took about 2 weeks before 2.3.4 got updated to 2.3.6, then 2.3.7 was released. I don't see the issue of waiting, patience ;-) ...imagine waiting for an HTC phone update?

I was just making sure there was nothing wrong with the device. I love it I would just exchange it thinking something was wrong with it. I can wait just as long as my phone is fine. Thanks for the info on how long it took. My HTC took a long time just to get 2.3.3. That is the whole reason that I bought the Nexus was to get the most up to date stuff.

Ok so I am going on my second week of owning my I9020A nexus s. I am loving the phone, and its speed is great. Coming from the HTC inspire this thing is blazing fast. I know that I have posted this many times, but I want to see if there is any other insight into my question. Ok like I said it has been two weeks ago that I bought the phone from Best Buy. I have not received one OTA update from Google over the two weeks. I have done the checkin thing countless number of times. I do not want to manuel update right now. I really want the first update to come from google to make the phone will get OTA updates. My 3g and wifi notifications are green which from what I understand means I am connected to google servers. My one big question is how long should I wait for an OTA update before I should start to get worried that I want get one? 2.3.4 works fine on the phone, but I really don't want to miss out on ice cream sandwich. Knowing that other AT&T nexus s's have 2.3.6 or later is what bothers me. Why has my phone not gotten the update yet? If anyone has some insight into this please let me know. I just want something that lets me know that I am not the only one, and also nothing is wrong with my phone. Thanks in advance for the help.

You need to relax...the updates are rolled out based on IMEI or carrier or something similar which is why updates don't happen immediately for everyone. If all Nexus phones got the update at the same time, the servers would be overloaded for months.

As for update ability of your phone, don't worry about it - if it works normally, then it will update normally. Worst case scenario is you would have to do a Factory Reset to wipe it and then update it.
Why has my phone not gotten the update yet?
As I said, updates roll out according to an unknown schedule. I believe it has something to do with IMEI as well as carriers (and some secret algorithm). So if you don't get it right away, it's not an issue. I went through the same thing with my Nexus S, the updates didn't roll out for me very quick while others on the same carrier were getting it.

If the version you have now works fine, and it sounds like it does, just wait and the phone will notify you when an update is available.
In the mean time, have a beer and relax.
:)

Thanks for your response. I just did not want to have a faulty phone and not get updates. The main reason I got the phone was because it was pure Google and I get the latest updates. As I said I had the HTC inspire that was running 2.3 and was slow. This phone is already an upgrade. 2.3.4 is running fine the battery life is pretty good I think it could be better, but hey I really just want ice cream sandwich. Again thanks for the info. The only reason I keep asking is because I never got a solid answer, and that is what I got from you.

Well, I have Nexus S on AT&T, bought from Best Buy in August. It still on 2.3.4. Not that I need 2.3.6 but I wonder if I'm not going to miss ICS or how long it takes to get update, given the fact that 2.3.6 has been released 2 month ago and I still don't have it

I've had updates take as long as a few weeks to roll out to my phone, but you're going on several months now, which is strange. Have you tried going to Menu>Settings>About Phone>System Updates?

If there's nothing there, try dialing *#*#CHECKIN#*#*. You don't have to hit Send, it'll initiate the checkin when you hit the last *. Then you'll get a little notification up top telling you checkin succeeded. After that, check in the settings for system updates again. If it's still nothing, give it an hour or two and check again.

You can always update manually if you don't want to keep waiting. Here's a thread to walk you through it: http://androidforums.com/nexus-s/327991-guide-manually-update-2-3-4-2-3-2-2-3-1-a.html

Make sure you read through the whole thread. There have been a few changes since it was made. I'll have to update it when I get a chance.

Thanks. Not that I need 2.3.6, just I don't get what is going on with update to my phone and wonder if ICS update won't be affected. This one I really want

I wouldn't worry about it. 2.3.6 broke tethering on my other nexus. From what I've read they pushed it out and then cut the update short. And 2.3.7 was never pushed out? Granted, that's just what I've read. My new nexus(bricked the other trying to get back to stock for ICS) is still at 2.3.4 which makes me think that what I've read was true. And I don't know what changed between .4, .6, and .7(used a rom based on it), but it was nothing that I noticed except for the broken tethering in .6.

When 2.3.6 first came out, it did break tethering, so it was pulled; however, it was re-released a few days later still as 2.3.6 but with working tethering. I got the official 2.3.6 update OTA a few weeks after it was released, and my tethering works fine.

So I have heard rumors that the ICS update requires 2.3.6 before you can get the new one. Well if this is the case I am in big trouble because my AT&T nexus s is still running 2.3.4. Has anyone heard about this? I really don't want to manuel update I dont want to break something. I am really just worried that I will never get an OTA. I like the phone, but ICS is one of the reasons that I got the phone and if I could not get it that would really make me disappoint in google. If anyone has the nexus s At&t and is running 2.3.6 please if you have any advice let me know.

The link floating around for the Official 4.0.3 I9020T update does indeed require 2.3.6, but that's only because the person who logged the URL was on a 2.3.6 device and could only see that link. OTA updates will accommodation older versions of Android.

That said, the AT&T version of the Nexus S (I9020A) has not received the ICS update at all, yet. It's likely still being tweaked and tested for the different baseband. Those with the I9020A running 4.0.3 are people who rooted their phones, forced the I9020T update to install (with the wrong baseband), and then flashed a working radio.

There are a few reasons your phone is still on 2.3.4. It could be that since the ICS update is just around the corner, they're not bothering to push the 2.3.6 update anymore and you'll simply be updated straight to ICS when it comes out. Or, it could be AT&T slowing things down. I know that in some cases, the carrier is the one that rolls out the updates. Try not to worry about it. We won't let you get left behind.
