Google Syncing

I just had my replacement Droid sent to me in the mail after I made the bright decision to leave it in my pocket so that it could find itself in the washing machine. Next day I got my replacement phone in the mail, and the data recovery was seamless. Soon as I linked the phone to my google account, everything was restored, contacts, apps, personalized settings, pictures, everything. It was awesome!

Im just curious, was all of this stuff that got restored to my phone all from the google cloud?

Whenever I get a new phone will it always restore these items to my phone once I link it to my google account?

Depending on how you have your phone set up... yes email, contacts, calendar items, and apps are typically backed up by Google.

I bought a used MyTouch 3G, did a factory reset, and configured it to my liking, including a Google account.

1) How can I make sure that I have it set up properly so that Google will have all my stuff?

2) How often does Google back things up? Can I do it manually?
