I gave up waiting for an invite from Google since I've been waiting since it started last year. So I finally decided to give Youmail a try for a VVM solution in the meantime. So far I'm loving it. Obviously Google Voice offers more than just VVM, but that waste main feature I was after.

Yeah you can buy an invite, but I don't feel like paying someone who has nothing to with the service.
