Google voice better on iphone? (voip)

My friend was showing my on his Iphone that he is able to make voip calls with his google voice account/ application.

But on my android with google voice I have to use minutes?

Why would this functionality be better on the Iphone and can I obtain it on my android phone? Meaning can I send and receive calls over data with google voice on my android device?

Works the same. You also use minutes on the iPhone when using the official Google Voice. If you want to make calls over wifi or 3G/4G data, you need to use a different app. On the Android platform, I recommend GrooVe IP.

But he used it only using the Google Voice app with no additional applications?
There is no way to do that with Androids version?

There is no way to do this on Android or iOS using only the GV app. Google Voice is NOT VOIP. It is a call forwarding service only (except using it via gtalk in gmail, but I digress)...

How are you so sure it wasn't using minutes on his iPhone?

Your friend is definitely using minutes on his iPhone. I have an iPhone and the Google Voice app and to make a call, the Google Voice app basically calls your phone first and then connects it to whoever it is you're calling.

If you meant you can't dial a number from within the Google Voice app for Android, that's because Google Voice on Android integrates with the native dialer. You can make it so calls in the native dialer go through Google Voice depending on what settings you choose:

  1. Use Google Voice to make all calls
  2. Do not use Google Voice to make any calls
  3. Only use Google Voice for international calls
  4. Ask every time I make a call
If you have it set to option 1, any calls you make from the native dialer (bar 911, I think) will go through Google Voice.
