Help Google Voice Dialler Hangs

I just got my S5 a week ago and I'm loving it. The only real complaint is that the Bluetooth voice dialler doesn't work at all. This has been the case since day one. I know of some threads that claim the problem is the result of applications that monitor the headphone jack, but I had this problem before installing anything whatsoever (got the phone and left on a work-related trip). I also tried disabling the Recommended Apps feature, which adds a notification toolbar when the headset is connected and I tried restarting the phone and then using the dialler without connecting the headset at all. No joy.

The symptom I'm getting is that the Google voice dialler opens with its grey screen and the word Initializing and just sits there. At first I thought it had something to do with some initial config that needs to happen, but I once left it for over twenty minutes. It doesn't go any further.

It seems odd that this is so terribly broken out of the box. As far as I can tell, I cannot even try S Voice as alternative. Pressing the dial button on my car kit always brings up the Google dialler.

Any ideas?
