Help Google Voice Question(forwarding)

What happens when some one calls my google voice number? I think it goes through a forwarding number to hit my vzw number. Does any one know what that number is and if it is defined by area or state or what? I want to add the forwarding number to my Friends n Families because then ALL outgoing and INCOMING phone calls will be FREE as well as texts
