Help Google Voice+Sipdroid on TMobile 30$ Plan

Kwala

Newbie
I'm using GV with Sipdroid to overcome the problem of just 100min voice. This is my first month (2 weeks so far) and I already run out of min. That wouldn't be a problem if people would at least be able to call me, but they don't. And when they try to call my GV number it rings on their phones but my phone never rings.

I installed GrooVeIP to try and it works fine, I make and receive calls, no problem. So it must be something on the settings of Sipdroid.

I would rather use Sipdroid as it uses the native dialer and calls over data without having to pay for it.

Anyone who's been through this? Any ideas?

Thanks

Well, my plan ( once my Nexus 4 gets here) is to port my primary number to Google Voice . Install Grove IP and take it from their . Most of the time I'm in a home that has no cell signal anyway .

How is VOIP treating you? I have the $30 plan for about 26 days. I use VOIP as my only source of phone call.

Life was hard. Then I get into pizzing contest with everyone that I call because they cant hear me or I cant hear them and so in the end, I gave up.

I can live with only texting people so I don't mind. I only use the 100 minutes for important stuff

You can try going the easy way, using Google Voice and an app such as GrooveIP or Talkatalk but the quality will be mediocre due to the high bandwidth consumption of the g711 codec used by Google Voice. Or you could go the more complex way and get really good voice quality with minimal bandwidth usage by using g729 or iLBC codecs. You can find a very good write-up here.

The problem is that since I ran out of minutes I can't receive any calls, neither to my regular phone number nor to my Google Voice number. To my Google Voice number people say it rings and rings but I never get the calls...

Another thing that I'd like to know is if receiving calls counts as part of your 100 min? Because I wasn't making any calls at all but I received a few calls, some of them were quite long and then I found out I ran out of my 100 min...

Google Voice by is going to use your T-Mo plan minutes on both inbound and outbound calls. To go around that limitation and have unlimited inbound and outbound minutes you can either use a 3rd party app such as GrooveIP or Talkatone or go the more complex route described here. Both scenarios will give you unlimited calling. GrooveIP and Talkatone work perfect on good WiFi connections but voice quality can get pretty bad on 3G, unless you have really good signal. Going the complex route will give you great voice quality on even mediocre 3G signal.

I tested this out some... As other posters said, GrooveIP was fine over wifi, but really suffered elsewhere.

As far as I know, minutes are minutes - it doesn't matter if they are incoming. If you want to be able to answer your GV number with GrooveIP and not use minutes have your GV account set to forward to chat only. Don't have it forward to your cell number.

If you don't want to go that route I thought you could pay 10

One small advice, if you do use VOIP, when you find a spot where there is no banding and everything sounds ok, please do stand STILL. Do not move. Do not even try VOIP while moving like in a car.

On some day calling will be great. On other day, calling will be bad. I just dont know why this is.

So bare with me through this hypothetical...

I was stupid and didn't really read to far into the google voice porting thing, figuring that 100 minutes would be more than enough, which normally it is...

So im set up on the prepaid $30/month plan already with my nexus, and from what Im reading, I wont be able to port my number while on this plan.

What im wondering though is if I went into a tmobile store with the nexus, and signed up for month to month on the 79.99 a month plan that does allow call forwarding through google and THEN ported my number immediately...Would I be able just sign back up for the $30/month plan with my google voice number forwarding to my normal number?

Sorry if I explained that terribly...I just got home from a 12/hr shift and im a little buzzed.

I don't think you can jump back and forward with tmobile prepaid. Only one time allowed. If you going ti jump on $70 you're going to stick with it.

The $30 100 min is one time only n only at new sign up. Other plan you can move up n down. When you are out of the country, just use the pay by the minute plan until u come back. Saving money all around.

I jump to a new plan and it doesnt kick in right away. I have to call in and they kick in right away.

My $70 plan is actually $60. You can buy refill at discount on ebay. Just keep on checking everyday.

My lack of understanding in VoIP costed me my 100 min in a week.
I have gone the complex way and now I understand how the whole thing works and it's working pretty good compared to how it was.

Thanks.

Yea it sucks that they count incoming calls too.. Anyway the workaround suggested above to use VoIP is giving me good call quality, both through WiFi and T-Mob data.

How is your plan with Solavei?

My husband and I have been using Solavei since January. We've both been happy so far.

It's nice to be on an unlimited plan so I don't worry about usage. The referral thing has also been working out so no regrets about not making the 100 plan work.

If you aren't familiar it's $49 for unlimited talk/text/data unthrottled for the first 4GB (with taxes and fees ~$55.) For every three people who sign up through your referral link (and stay customers) they pay back $20/month.

I have been using Tmo $70 uplimited plan. But I have been paying at $60 if you buy the refill from ebay. I could get it even lower but $80 for a $100 value is a pretty realistic plan.

So another $5 more from $55.

Does my idea float or not?

Depends on if you have friends and family who are interested in Solavei (and if you need the truly unlimited data or not.) It also depends on how reliably you can get the refill cards.

Two "trios" (groups of three) have signed up through my link. That's $40/month paid back to me. I also got a one time $50 bonus because I got my first trio in my first 60 days. I like that math better. :D

I'm hoping I'm on my way to my phone paying for both my line and my husband's.

so got the 100min tmobile plan as well. ran out of minutes. When people call me they get my phone is out of service or something like that. Not even sent to a voicemail. I tried activating my GV voice mail but you got to call a number that uses a non american and non canadian area code, so VOIP wont call those. Basically no way to activate it.

I was thinking of porting my call number to google voice. Will that help? Do i keep the data tmobile plan? How would i receive calls if i dont have anymore minutes?

Long story short, I have no more minutes, and i want to recieve calls or at least a voice mail using my native cell phone number.
