i have a evo that i just use over wifi. not activated. I am trying to see if i can still use google voice to make calls over wifi. it wont let me. doesn't even give me the options. is there a way around that?
Yes, it can be done. You're going need an account with a sip provider of some sort (sipgate, for example). Gingerbread has built-in SIP client support (who knows if HTC/Sprint will roll it out with that capability in tact), but if you have root, you can flash a GB ROM and do it that way. Of course, that's asking quite a bit, so only go that route if you've done that for other reasons. Otherwise, you'll need a SIP client. You can use Sipdroid for that. So, what you'd need to do is install sipdroid, then configure it to use your SIP account from whatever provider you choose. The problem is that most of them only allow free call-in (people can call you), but you have to pay to call out. You do get a phone number, though, which means you can put it behind google voice. In doing so, you can initiate a call by using google voice to call your SIP number, then call whoever you wanted to call. The problem with doing that is that it requires you to initiate it from a computer, but that shouldn't be a big deal if you're only going to be doing this via wifi. Otherwise, there are various call-back options, some of which are somewhat complicated.
