Google Voice, what's the point?

I recommend that everyone get the GV number, so that you have all of the options if you choose to use them.

You get the best of both worlds if you do, meaning you can still use GV as your existing number's voicemail if you want to configure it that way.

I love Google Voice because I can call my daughter in Canada from my cell phone with no international fees (It does use cell airtime of course).

I forward my home phone to GV so I can get transcripts of left messages sent to my cell phone as soon as they are received. GV transcripts are about 80 percent accurate in my opinion, but I can always call GV and listen to my messages if I need clarification. I could set it up to forward calls directly to my cell phone, but I prefer just to let anyone calling me at home to leave a message.

And as soon as Google Voice allows porting, I'm gonna cancel my home service and use Google Voice as my home number!!! Yeah, $25 more in my pocket every month!!

I have never given my GV phone number out to anyone.
I don't need to with all the options I have listed above.

As far as invites go, when I asked for one from Google, it was only 2 or 3 days when they responded.
