google voice with virgin mobile.

I know the main reason people are getting google voice aside from the VM transcripts.. it's to try and lower your bill.. adding your google voice number to your friends and family since all calls are routed through the number.

I have a no contract service (virgin mobile) and can't do that. however one of the main reasons i'm wanting it.. is because I run out of minutes sometimes before I my 30 days are up.. and I still have unlimited texting and data until then. Sometimes I may be expecting a call so i'll have to go ahead and pay my bill early so I can get minutes back on my phone.

so here's my idea.. if I do get the google voice number whenever I run out of minutes on my phone.. I can easily change it online from ringing my cellphone to my parents landline or my parents cellphone (when they let me borrow it) that way i could wait on paying my bill until the unlimited texting/data runs out at the end of the 30 days.. and not waste more money.. and pay then.

here's my question... I searched for google voice numbers in my area and there weren't any. I can get a number in another city.. but it's not really close to where I live. will this really matter? are there any actual disadvantages to this.

how is google voice really.. do you experience any dropped calls more frequently then from using your real cell number.. how is the clarity in calls? how well is it integrated into androids.. is it a pain to use?

I've thought about it a lot, and I really think google voice would have a lot of benefits for me.. as long as it works properly.. I don't really care about the VM transcripts at all.. however it will be a neat feature. My main purpose is so I have a number where someone can always reach me if they need to. They won't ever have to get a message saying that my line has been disconnected or whatever it says when i'm out of minutes.

Do you think Google voice would work for me?

You can choose a GV for any area or area code you want, it will make a difference only to someone who has to pay for long distance or toll calls.

I use my GV a lot, rarely do I notice a difference in call quality. It does sometimes go down and sometimes there is degraded call quality but for the most part it's fine. To be fair, I've had trouble with regular Verizon calls from time to time too...nothing is perfect or fool proof ;)

The GV app is pretty straightforward for texts and voicemails and it's easy enough to change the forwarding number online. For what you need it for I think it would be a great choice.

If unlimited texting is costing you, you can ditch it and just use google voice, since you said you have unlimited data..

It also integrates pretty tightly with android since both are google native.
