Google wants payback on apple, sues apple

Like mentioned above, this isn't anything new. The media is just now getting their head out of their rear after the Sammy v apple

Moved to android lounge, and it'll probably he further merged with an ongoing thread when its found. In mobile so its slowing this down.

Niice although I find it hard for Google to win any of its claims as iPhone/iOS was released before Android

My wife was telling me about the Apple lawsuit and the settlement. All I can hope is that Apple gets what's coming to them. They have turned into an evil empire of sorts IMO.

Considering that in the beginning Apple actually used other companies ideas too. They got some of their ideas for their first computer from a Xerox factory.
The name iPhone was taken from Linksys, It was a trademark dispute that was settled.

They take the good parts of other companies ideas and integrate them. How does this make them any different from the companies they are suing?

Not to mention that Apple has been abusing the patents law for too long.
Some of their patents include common and almost generic hardware and software.
If they got their way, They would be an insane monopoly.
Goodbye freedom of choice.

heres my honest opinion....apple has been around a while android has only been around since 07 and they are getting better apple feels this is a bad thing and is going after samsung, google is now attacking apple for patents and all that hooblah if google wins youll never hear anything from apple again if they lose well war never changes

No one questions the fact that Apple routinely steals other's work. Not even Apple at their core.

The difference is Apple applied for and was granted US and International protection against some of their ideas (through patents and trademarks). That gives them legal ammunition to go after their competitors.

Are the patents vague and pretty much commonplace? Absolutely, they never should have been granted in the first place. Google, IMHO, should be on a fanatical campaign to patent every single aspect of their OS, like the notification center. Everyone knows that Apple just swiped that (pun intended), but unless Google gets off their behind and patents that, then Apple will be free to take the unprotected IP out there.

Motorola has been around and in communications forever. They must have some patents....

Motorola can claim Mars BTW. The Sojourner Rover used commercial Motorola radios to communicate with the lander.

On the contrary, Android has been around a little bit longer than many may believe. It was created way before the iPhone was probably even thought of. It just wasn't until 2007 when they (Google and the release of Android) hit the ground running.

Couldn't have said it any better.

Also their application for patents is just a joke at this point. I really believe that if you apply for a ridiculous patent, you should also lose an existing one, that would make companies (like apple) think about their patents that they apply for.

Apply after the death of Steve Jobs is acting like a brat, and thats why I stopped all use of all apple products. I do hope Apple gets what many of us want them to get

And you *know* Cisco's getting paid! ;)
Also, ios = cisco. That is the operating system that their routers and switches run on. Apple nabbed that too.... Though, I bet Cisco is still getting paid. ;)

Can't say that I disagree with you. Which is sad because they could be doing a lot of good. I seem to recall reading of a lawsuit with Apple (record label) and Apple Computers... there was a battle over the name. They all decided that Apple computers couldn't get into music and it'd be fair. Hmm... who's itunes through? I read in the same article that itunes is now the largest seller of music. Not sure if that's true, but it seems like it could be.

 And all these lawsuits are so annoying. It frustrates me.

we should patten the alphabet! problem solved! everyone has to pay us!

but in all seriousness, companies are starting to abuse the patent system and that's why we are in this sad situation.

iPhone is not the only trademark that Apple is likely paying Cisco for. Apple calls their firmware IOS which as most network folks know is also what Cisco calls the core operating system for their Cisco routers/switches.

Look what I found.. from the Macworld Expo 1997, Steve Jobs talking about Apple and Microsoft running into patent issues... and in his words

Rather than repeating history, I'm extremely proud of both companies, that they have resolved these differences in a very very professional way.

Macworld Boston 1997-The Microsoft Deal - YouTube

The quote starts around 1 minute in, looks like with out Steve Jobs, history is going to repeat itself again, and they aren't going to be professional about it.

This was something interesting I found related to the whole situation, hope someone finds it interesting like me haha

Here's the breakdown of Android v. iOS:
10/2003: Android, Inc. founded (unaffiliated with Google) to develop mobile OS (for any company)
2004: Apple begins iPhone development
8/2005: Google buys Android (with intent to make Google phones)
6/2007: First iPhone released
9/2008: First Android released

So you can see that Apple had an intent to enter the mobile market before Google (2004 v. 2005), and Apple entered the mobile market before Google (2007 v. 2008). Android the company was around forever but it was acquired by Google after they presumably discovered Apple's 2004 plans to enter the mobile market.
