Got It......It's fast....it's really REALLY fast...

I know this isn't quite along the function lines of the rest of the posts on this tread.....

Can you tell me if the N1 comes with a screen protector in the packaging? I know all the myTouch 3Gs do by default and I believe the HTC G2 does as well....wondered if they kept that up with the N1.

It only comes with a little case for the phone, headphones, the charger, and a plug to connect to your usb.

I'm about to hit the sack...I'll make sure I test this in the morning but damn, it takes a while to load on my MAC haha. This may be a 1 hour event, lol.
Pick a smaller video if you want, so long as they're the same on both phones.

I personally didn't expect youtube vids to buffer on 3G, is that common?

Here is something I'm wondering. The text to speech looks interesting and clearly you like it. Can you dictate the text (like a TXT message) using a blue tooth device, or does it only use the speakerphone or do you actually have to hold it up to your mouth?

Regarding the Touchdown / Roadsync I can tell you that no Exchange program for Android syncs and updates directly your calendar and contacts yet.
Touchdown can "push" your contacts and calendar to your Google Calendar and Google contacts, but only on the phone (if you open your Google contacts on the computer you won't see them there).
What I do is I use Google Calendar Sync on my computer that gets the job done.
This is as good as it gets for now, and much better than any HTC exchange program.
I have been using Touchdown for a few months now, their data is definitely secure, and you can check on their website (I think nitrodesk.com) that they update it a lot.

So that blogger you gave your review to. It's saying the resolution of the screen is 800x480 .... Is that accurate? I thought I read somewhere it was a 720 screen?

Arent you getting a little donation happy?

I for one, think the OP asking for donations to answer questions he obviously wanted to share for free to begin with is completly wrong and am surprised the mods allow it. Is this what it's come to? Are we going to start seeing everyones sig have a donation link for them answering a question that another user posted?

This is a community, helping others and I think that has been forgotten.

Regards, Mark

I'd like to know more about the AT&T EDGE on the N1... I have an iPhone 3G S currently and I'm looking to switch to the N1. Compared to the iPhone's 3G speeds, how does EDGE feel on the N1? Is is substantially slower?

I wasn't familiar with that benchmark up until you brought it up, thanks.
Is there a forum run by the staff that came up with the benchmark? It would be nice to see a graph with scores on current phones as well.

TBH, benchmarks don't always the whole story. But if they are extensive, they might. The other day I read an article on a Snapdragon CPU with a GPU but I got blasted for it at the beginning of the thread. I had no idea it wasn't used for the N1 though.

Maybe that version of the CPU will be used for the true G1 replacement?
(please, no chin and >1500 mAh)

Your in luck.. although it's not terribly well categorized and you kinda need to click into the results to work out what phone it is but here's a table of some results:

softweg-studio.com Benchmark Score Table

The first 3 are actually laptops, then the next one is the holy grail (a nexus one) and the one underneath that is a leaked Sony X10 :p

Is the LED on the top capable of flashing multiple colors? (like the G1) You can test it with the application "Missed Call for Android 2.0" which is available in the Android market.

Regards

He mentioned donations once, more as a joke than anything.
I replied saying I have no problem dropping a few bucks into his pocket for all the work he's done in this thread, and asked him to post his paypal acct. Someone else recommended he put it into his sig. Nobody's making you pay anything. Hell, most people don't even say thank you or seem grateful at all, where's the "community" in that?

Consider how much time he's spent loading/testing/unloading apps, then typing up a response in this thread. Of course he wanted to share this information, but he also probably didn't expect to field this many questions. His sweat-equity is worth something IMO.

Also, this opportunity is somewhat unique on the web, to my knowledge there's no place else to get real-time answers to an unreleased device like this. It's better than any written review.

Agree entirely. Besides, given 3rd's enthusiasm, I get the feeling he's likely to use the contributions to buy more gear & software to test and tell us about. This is as "community" as anything I've seen in quite a while.

you guys are being a little delusional. 3rd would be installing and uninstalling apps on his own anyways. He has a new phone that not many other people have - he's going to play with it. We're lucky enough that he decided to share it with us, but that was his choice. None of the members here put a gun to his head and told him he better share and answer our questions or else. If he didnt want to do this he wouldnt have logged in and said anything at all. I think that the people who are actually willing to donate money to someone offering information to us is a nice thing, but I also think having a link to his paypal account is going a little far - even if its just a joke. This is a forum designed to help each other. Its not a place to sell your "services."

Thats how i see it anyways.

really??? I think anyone with half a brain would recognize that as soon as the people knew he had a real phone in his hands, that he would be bombarded with questions...

Great job bringing the comments down to personal insults.

Have a nice day.

Why do people have to twist facts? It's not like he is considering replying to questions based on whether you donated or not. Setting up a link for donations is ok with me.

I'll even go as far as to say that I wish he made money off of the N1 by putting up the whole review way earlier than he actually did.

There have been many units out there for a while but nobody else stepped up to answer our questions. While others were teasing with browsing menus in exotic languages and awfully shaky camera recordings, 3rd geer put out, gave us full frontal nudity. Can't complain!

Bottom line, he got a phone that is still not released in public. He was reviewing it for himself and for us as well. He could have stayed low but he was here for us all the time.

Not at all....honestly I am here because I want to SHARE information. Now to be completely honest, it actually turned in to a 24 hour deal, lol. I didn't realize it would get so crazy, but I've been trying to follow everyones instructions in installing, uninstalling, and testing the phone. I'm trying to give everyone the opportunity to literally test the device through me.

So in all fairness..it kind of is a job, but I also enjoy doing it. I do it because I know if I was on the other end, I'd be super excited to give as much info as possible.

Now, I typically get devices well in advance and this is something I plan to continue in this forum. Why....to bring information to you guys first hand. Most of the time I buy the devices at premium costs to get them first. So, anything helps, because again this is fun for me...but it's also a full time gig.

That being said..guys I'm out for a few hours...I'll be back to answer more questions.

It's clear there are differing opinions on this issue.
For my part in asking him to post his account, I accept some of the responsibility in upsetting anyone who has issue with it. (That's as close to an apology as you're gonna get ).

May I suggest from this point on we stay on-topic? The moderators on this forum are diligent, and are known to close threads that turn into flame-wars.
I think we can all agree that would be a shame.

Those who wish to donate should be allowed an opportunity to do so. Those who don't wish to, can do just that. Those who are somehow bothered by the whole idea of a donation can choose not to follow the thread.

May I remind folks that there is also an option to turn off signatures in User CP.

@3rd, please don't let this discourage you. The view-count and post-count alone speak for themselves as to the interest your thread is generating.

@Rix .... even the keyboard doesnt support multitouch... yes the hardware is capable of recognizing it. But the device as is in noway supports it. Its not just pinch to zoom.
