gotta say the eris while i had my doubts is a great device. especialy for rooting. its a powere house when it has a custom rom. gingerbread is epic. and it kicks the allys ass

I really wish that all of the OEMs would embrace people who want to root. I can understand a little why carriers do not want to support this - they are the ones that have to field first-level support calls from customers - but they could make the info about unlocking bootloaders available on their web sites and give the carriers the tools to recognize when a handset is rooted, giving them the ability to say to customers "call us back when you unroot and lock the bootloader." I'd be satisfied with that.
Unfortunately that would require that the CSR be allowed access to the phone number you are calling from. Phone companies don't seem to have caller ID yet.
