GPS and Battery

If you leave the GPS on at all times will it drain the battery, or will it only "kick-in" and drain the battery when you use applications that incorporate the GPS such as Google Maps?

I would prefer to just leave it on at all times, but only if it isn't draining my battery down.

At first I left it on because I was told that it only turned on if something was using it. Then I realized that the little GPS satellite thing was blinking in the top bar and I wasn't doing anything. That's when I turned it off.
