GPS and EV symbols in notification area

I live in an area where there is solid EVDO coverage yet my Hero doesnt display the 'EV' over the signal bars like it says it should according to the manual. My old Pre would tell me if I was on Sprint's EVDO network or 1x. Am I missing something?

Also, I constantly have a symbol of a satellite dish with flashing incoming network waves on my notification area even though I have turned off GPS and location services. I can't find anything about this symbol in the manual. anyone know what this is?

Thanks.

The satellite dish is your GPS. The other issue is mentioned many times here. Do a quick search and you'll find the answer.

Are you sure its been discussed in the Sprint HTC Hero forum because i've searched for 'EV symbol, EVDO symbol, EV Notification, EVDO notification', etc and a few other variants and only my post comes up. I'm searching posts and topics.

the ev symbol or at least the 1x symbol should be there. the gps should not as long as you dont have google maps or nav running.try opening the nav program to see if its running i know that it will stay on even in the background unless you exit it. googly maps turns it of when you leave the page. i remeber my gps turning on once whithout me doing anything but i opened advanced task killer and noticed the nav app was running yet i never turned it on. only happened once though.

My GPS symbol will stay up there if a program hangs on it. It just sits there flashing no matter what I do, but I really don't think it's using GPS... Oh, Android, with no ability to kill buggy apps. That wasn't too brilliant on Google's part.

You should have an EV or 1X symbol if you have data. Do you in fact have Data without any symbols up there? If not, that's a bug with the Hero for Sprint that can only be solved by restarting it. (and make sure your data services are on).
