GPS App suggestions/Help

Hi

Im planning on putting up some bat boxes in some woodland and it wont be easy to find them again in the future. I wanted to use a GPS app to create a point at every bat box and with an overlay of say google maps, however i havent found a program that will let me do this. I thoight google earth might let me do this but i havent been able to figure out a way of making it work in this fashion.

If i am missing something then please tell me or if you have a suggestion for a app that will allow me to log positions of my bat boxes and display it on the map as well so i can walk in the right directions it would be appreciated.

i hope i have been clear enough with that i am after.

Thanks

Mapquest has a way (I can't remember, it's been a while since I used it) of bookmarking "here". I think you just press on the "you" icon and it lets you save that location.

I hope +/- 30 feet is good enough for you, because in open air (the entire sky visible), that's the best GPS guarantees. If you need "exactly here within a few feet all the time", you need millimeter GPS, which uses correction signals sent from fixed locations that note the difference between where they are and where the current GPS signals say they are. (And they're not cheap - in the 3 and 4 figure "not cheap" category.)

If you're in the woods the situation is worse - different leaves delay the signals by different amounts of time depending on how much moisture is in them, so you can be standing still and doing 10mph in circles because the breeze is moving the leaves in and out of a satellite's path.

Thanks guys some good suggestions there. the only stipulation is that i want to be able to plot them over googlemaps so i can walk to the next point easily enough.

on iphone there is GPS logger but the android version is quite a bit different and doesnt have nearly as many features.

There's an app called Tect O Trak, that would do the job very nicely for you.

Tect O Trak » HistoryHunters.co.uk

The app is actually for metal detectorists, but you could easily adapt the find-spot markers to bat box markers. Each marker can be named, a photo taken, and given a detailed description. It will also record multi-coloured paths to the individual Bat boxes.

Good luck with the project. :thumb:
