I just want to know if GPS uses up data or if it adds an extra charge to my bill.

GPS on it's own does not require data, and is not an additional charge. However many of the applications that use the GPS may use data. The best way around it is to disable the data when you don't want to use it in settings->Wireless & Networks ->Mobile Networks.
