Help GPS issues with the DNA?

I love my HTC DNA, the only issue I've had so far is GPS accuracy.

I'll be driving down the highway, and the DNA/Google Nav will suddenly tell me "Turn left on Knotondis Road and ..." and show me OFF the interstate by about 300 feet or more driving on some side road! After bouncing around anywhere between 15 seconds and a minute or two, it corrects itself and shows me cruising down the interstate again! I could understand if this happened occasionally, but it happens way too much!

Also, I use Google Tracks when I'm hiking. I will get random "jumps" where suddenly it shows me 250 feet on the other side of the river!?! I've tried Trimble Outdoors and several other GPS hiking programs, they all had worse results that I get with Google Tracks. Another annoyance is the the DNA GPS always, always, always OVERSTATES the distance hiked. On three to six mile hikes on trails with known distances, it consistently overstates the hiking distance by 14% to 18%. On a shorter hike that is measured at 1.5 miles, it overstated the distance by about 27%!?! (1.9 miles instead of 1.5 miles) Of course it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that this is the extra distance of the spurious "jumps".

Is anybody else having similar issues? Are there any fixes or workarounds to get better results? I know that some dedicated GPS units use "averaging" to eliminate the spurious readings and jumps. Anybody know of any Android software that does something like that?

One thing I've tried with marginally better results is to go into "Location" under "Settings" and de-select "Verizon Location Services". That seems to have helped a little, not really significant enough for me to be sure...

I have the same problems with mine too. I'll be driving and it will freak out for a second give some crazy directions and then go back to normal. Also when I use it for running/walking it is consistently about 1/4 mile more distance than my Droid Bionic and iPhone 5.

Tried resetting, different GPS options, etc. and still haven't found a fix.

The only fix I have seen is to install GPS Status from play store and use it to cakibrate your gps...other than that would think it was a problem phone losing a signal for some reason...are you using an app killer or anything tlike that? Power saver mode? maybe one of these couldbe an issue.

Thanks for the replies!

I have tried 'GPS Test' and 'GPS Essentials', but not 'GPS Status' so I will give that a go.

Not using an app killer, but I am using Qualcomm's Battery Guru. I will try turning it off!

Bogie, please keep us posted on any progress you make, or any problems you continue to have, and I will do the same...

UPDATE:

I was having GPS issues with my HTC DNA that lead me to open this thread.

BAD NEWS: I broke my HTC DNA and had to replace it.

GOOD NEWS: The GPS in my new HTC DNA is ROCK SOLID! and my previous issues are NON-EXISTENT in this new phone!!

Conclusion: The first HTC DNA I owned was a good phone and performed well in all other respects but had a defective GPS unit!

I've never noticed that issue with mine, but I use Waze instead of Google Maps and it may have some different smoothing algorithms or other magic that hides the hiccups.

As a Waze map editor, I can attest that plenty of phones act up in this way, because I'm constantly clearing the user reports that people file when their phone puts them on a wrong nearby road.

In my area, it tends to happen on a very rural part of the interstate where the phone service is poor from every carrier, and all the major TV/radio stations transmit from. One of the two is probably causing the GPS to go wonky.
