Help GPS issues?

Love the rose analogy, however, the rose hasn't withered, it just has no scent. Roses should be beautiful (check) and in full bloom (it's opening nicely) but the breeders frequently leave out the scent (the GPS). I hope it can be fixed and be as beautiful as any old garden rose can be.

Hi all, firstly, thanks to all posters on here. This thread has been invaluable in working out what is going on with my new galaxy i9000 s.

I have had two of these. My replacement arrived this morning and it's exactly the same as my first. ie. a really nice phone that does NOT do GPS in any way, shape or form. It'll be another 8gig one as they are both contract phones from Orange.

Neither phone can locate without Wireless being on, even if I take a walk to the nearby graveyard to get a clear look at the sky. I am pretty sure the shaky results some have been getting are due to them having wifi on as this allows it to locate (to within 700 meters). Turn that off and nothing.

The worst thing is Samsung are in COMPLETE DENIAL about this. I contacted them, they said it was an individual handset problem, they would send me a WAP update (never arrived) but when I spoke to Orange they agreed it was faulty.

I am now in the same boat as a previous poster. I love the phone but I REALLY want GPS so, do I send this one back and get an HTC or keep it and risk Samsung never actually addressing this issue?

I also couldn't get KEIS to download - I am running XP pro - after several attempts I gave up thinking I could set USB to mass storage and get to my photo's that way. Trouble is, neither my Mac nor my PC recognises it as a drive. Samsung, of course, want me to ring their premium rate tech support line rather than admit their software is b****..

Nice for texting and syncs with googlemail well. Err... that's about it on the upside.

Right, well poor old Orange are sending me another one tomorrow - I feel like a test pilot - as they say they can't offer me any other models until they are sure there is a fault.
I should clarify my last post. I actually do like this phone, the screen is great and the email and web are fantastic. It's just when something is as badly wrong as the GPS they really shouldn't sell it as a GPS device.

I also hate it when companies refuse to admit there is a problem.

Folks there is a nice new app called *** Latitude Update *** on Google Market, that lets you update Google Latitude as frequent as you want (even when Google's own app is down), see your locations history on map etc

I notice it is a paid only App.
Given the present problem with GPS on the SGS, how strongly would you rate the use and effectiveness of this application.

I've had a communication..... A good time to look is anytime after the 15th Oct and going through into the weekend.
Scandinavia to be the first.... ;)

Yet another thank you to commenters, especially Beardsy for shedding (haha) light on the GPS problem. GPS is an absolute requirement for me, and unless a GPS fix comes it'll be the Desire HD -- whichever comes first (to Germany).

Have to say, it strikes me as a surprise that someone who owns a Galaxy i7500 is willing to consider another Samsung phone ;)

True dat. But it's all about the hardware, and compared to the i7500, the i9000 has a HUGE userbase, which means homecooked solutions (ala Drakaz) should abound, or maybe -- just maybe -- Samstink will actually listen for a change.

Plus work is paying for this one. :)

Well phone 3 arrived from Orange yesterday and it is exactly the same as the first two. No GPS function whatsoever. Orange tech support (bless 'em) had me using Orange Maps at one point, even though I told them the fix it got was from mobile masts not GPS - all info gleaned from this forum.

Anyway, upshot is that I have fallen in love with the big clear screen, which I can read without glasses and also the wonderful SWYPE text entry system so I am keeping this one.

It annoys me that Orange and Samsung can get away with selling this 8 gig one as a GPS device because it simply isn't.

Thanks for this Beardsy. Who knows, it might end up doing all the things it says on the tin though I won't hold my breath.

A question, if you don;t mind. As an Orange customer, will I need to use KIES to get my upgrade? I can't install it.

Judging by all the leaked Froyo roms from samsung that are suddenly appearing allover the XDA forums, I'd say Beards' estimated 'any day now.. maybe' is probably correct. First reports sound good though not much about GPS yet (which may or may not come as a separate update).
Let's keep fingers crossed that these updates will make us all happy campers :)

Sorry, it'll be through Kies I'm afraid.
Incremental updates can come OTA but this kind of update will require to get right at the heart of the filesystem.

If anyone is interested, unlike HTC who let each carrier do their updates at different times, Samsung want it done all at the same time.
One carrier at the moment though is not keeping up with the update and is holding things back..... But it still looks good to go very soon.

Hey all. I'm hoping someone may help with me a Galaxy S question. I currently have a Desire but want a Galaxy S asap. Before I buy I am wondering Is the GPS issue across the board or is it only effecting random units. I'd love to buy in the morning but I'm concerned about getting a defective unit.
Thanks in advance

It seems to be across the board pretty much. Although newer devices seem less affected than older ones, none of them have a GPS thats as reliable as it should be. If I were you I'd wait for the results of the software updates that are expected to be released any day now. Either a lot of people on this and other forums will be very happy, or else the days of SGS are officially over and youre probably better off getting a DesireHD then.

You remember me saying this earlier about one carrier holding things back.......

I'm trying to get an update but it's not looking good for this month let alone this weekend.

It would seem like the update is available in Sweden now, however after trying to update you get denied.

Wonder why?

Went in fine, no problems. I can however confirm that after the update I had to do a factory reset to get the Android Market app back.

Now I will see if the GPS works any snappier.

Hi Beards,

I presume Froyo is definitely going to include the GPS and file system fixes? Is that confirmed?

It seems that, from the noises made by people who downloaded the most recent 'leaked' versions this week, there's no unanimous agreement about massive improvements in either of those areas :(

thanks

Ive more or less given up on the hope of the GPS coming anywhere close to competing phones for stability and reliability. Ofcourse I still hope but I honestly don't think its gonna happen. A faster fix sure, but the amount of sats and their signal strength it sees are just not gonna allow a proper A to B navigation without dropping the signal. Atleast filesystem is something we can fix ourselves.

Froyo will be nice but I fear the 'GPS fix' won't be a real fix at all, except for those units that wouldnt get a lock at all. On later models thats already not the case, but the signal reception is just too weak. *SAD*
