Oh yea of little faith.... Give it time. There could be a few teething problems.
Lets face it this is a hurried fix and they have got to be seen to get it right.

Anyway, NOTHING can be as bad as the problems the iPhone 4 is facing at the moment.
I'm currently on Part 6 with the latest two being here & here
 
Seeing as we are comparing GPS performance I thought I would share a picture from My Tracks. The blue line is how I actually walked - would you guys say that this is good, ok or poor performance on my GPS's behalf?

As I was walking, the little marker sometimes spun around like crazy obviously having issues determining what direction I was walking, but maybe that is of lesser importance.

I think that looks reasonable...

Out of interest, did you change the settings for MyTracks (ie: change the minimum accuracy?)

No, changed nothing, just ran it vanilla - should I set it for minimum and try again? Or what do you guys do?
 
I was playing around with it yesterday.

This was in a built up city centre and it did move around a bit with the accuracy set to default.

I moved it down to either 20m or 50m (I can't remember which), which seemed to force it to only record points when there was a proper GPS signal, not just guess(!)
 
I don't know if this is of any interest to anyone in this thread, but the US version for AT&T comes with JF6. I noticed that when playing with a demo unit last night. I didn't get to check the GPS though, so I don't know if it fixes it or not.
 
Hey all, today I have the modaco forum recommendation of set to "cold start" a go.So I set Skyhook to off and set the start to cold.

Subjective opinion - took ages to get a lock, once it did it was no better / worse than with a hot start on navigation in a car.

I will perhaps get mytracks installed and do some walking tests.

I tried the Cold Start myself yesterday but if anything it made it worse....
No matter how long I waited it would not update the position.
Switching back to Hot Start and My Tracks found my location, the error circle shrank to the same size as the marker position and followed me happily along with the dogs.... Just like a puppy snapping at my heels.
 
As it's nearing the end of the week I contacted Clove to find out what the latest was on the J6 firmware.
This is the reply I received:-

Im really really quite happy with the gps in my new phone. Much better than the last one. Even without Waze!

Sorry to disappoint, but I think the accuracy you are showing here is quite poor. Or, on the positive side, we should expect this to be dramatically improved if Samsung pull their finger out.
My friend has an HTC Desire, and the accuracy it has is incredible. Even in built up areas it seems to have an accuracy of about 1m ( My judgement). By comparison, my Galaxy S and yours are terrible.
 
I've had trouble getting my GPS to work properly as well. I've tried rebooting.. tinkering with numerous settings, etc. After some research across the net I've found quite a few different approaches and ideas. Using a mix of all of them, I've come up with a solution that seems very effective with my Samsung Vibrant. I haven't had a chance to test extensively because I'm doing it from work..but so far so good.

**Not responsible if your GPS still doesn't work properly**

Go to settings->Location and Security-> Enable "Use GPS Satellites" and disable "Use wireless networks".

Go to Dialer and dial *#*#1472365#*#* - This is where you may cause harm if you're not careful. Only adjust the settings listed.
Under "Application settings" Change "Operation Mode" to MS Based
Go back
Under "SUPL/CP Settings" edit the "Server" test, and remove the "http://" leaving just www.spirent-lcs.com

That's it!


Just so you know..
What is MS-Based mode of operation?
In MS-Based mode, the network provides the satellite information to the device, based on a rough estimate of where the device is located, and the device acquires the GPS signals from the satellites and calculates its location. After the initial fix, the device operates like an autonomous GPS receiver, until the satellite information must be refreshed, at which time the device goes back to the network to update the satellite information. MS-Based mode is appropriate for applications that require the device location to be updated rapidly, such as a navigation application.

Can the GPS work in autonomous mode?
No, the GPS receiver requires the assistance of the network elements to acquire its initial location fix.

PS - This also is to confirm that the US version has the same GPS issues. ;)



EDIT: You can also try using supl.google.com port 7276 under "SUPL/CP Settings" - reported to acquire lock quicker.

I've seen my friend's Desire show things like that he's out walking on nearby railroads and taking significant detours he hasn't taken so the performance seems to vary from individual handset even on the Desire.

Search for my firmware here wouldn't work. But seeing this, I'm wondering if I have a firmware that you have heard is good. I have a Captivate, and the Baseband version is I897UCJF6.

I have not been able to test it yet. But one thing I can say, is that my Tilt never got signals inside my house; it was very accurate (based on driving, never used it walking); and this one gets 2-3 satellites.

I'm going on a drive tomorrow, and will try it and see how it goes.

Very little use so far:

First short experience this morning
It took over 5 min to get a GPS signal. But I don't let that bother me yet, it might have been a short between the operator (me) and the phone :eek:

Second still short experience
I loaded Google NAV. Started out to head out about 50 miles. Got a fix in less than a minute and seemed good. But, realized I was leaving an hour early, and came back hope. :rolleyes:

Will report back later tonight or tomorrow.
 
I'm in the us and have a captivate with very poor GPS. Can't install lies on win7 64 bit. So I hope I can get the software update somehow
