Help GPS issues?

changing to supl.google.com, no ssl, port 7276 under "SUPL/CP Settings" did it for me. Before I got 0 in view and 0 in use. Now I got 11 in view, 9 in use and an 16,9 meters accuacy :)

Q1. What country are you using it with?
Q2. Where exactly is 'No SSL'?
Did you mean SUPL Secure Socket = OFF?

If you're in the UK, try entering "supl.nokia.com" and see what happens. The supl.google.com fix was suggested for phones brought to the US from Europe, perhaps because the nokia address for their location server doesn't work so well outside of Europe. There may be better (i.e., faster to reach) SUPL servers in the UK itself...might want to do a search.

And yes, SSL = Secure Socket Layer.

Remaining off topic a second - KIES
I've read a of a lot of problem with that software. No software at all came with my Captivate as well as no manual.

At this particular moment in time (very short on experience on Android and this phone), I don't necessarily have plans to synch my phone to the PC. I am hoping to make use of Dropbox to move photos and videos...maybe.

So any other reasons to get this software? If so, any suggestions for where to find a good version? (Not trying to be lazy...just expect a search to find a lot of crap. Hoping for someone in the know to point me).

Back on topic - GPS today
Well, add together the new phone, new GPS software (Google Navigate), it was an experience.

Anyway, the GPS is found a bit slow. Having seen some post of 15-20 seconds...but it was 2 min to 5 min to get the signal. But once I did, it seemed to work flawlessly for 50 miles, each direction. (Again no walking).

I will also try to run that keystroke sequence ( I think it is earlier in this thread) and see what the readings folks have been discussing come in at ,and will post back.

This far it doesn't seem like Samsung will do OTA updates so you'll probably need Kies to download and install the official updates. It may be ways to do that through unofficial means though.

Other than that there's no reason to use Kies unless you specifically want to. Moving files from and to the phone is done without any software at all (other than your computer's OS of course). Kies does have some video converters and so on but since the Galaxy S, and it's variants, can handle so many types of media files I can't imagine that you would have good use of that (not to mention there's other dedicated programs for that).

Hi, I received my SGS yesterday and used it this morning for running with runkeeper.
GPS is better than my iphone 3G, signal is certainly stronger and clearly more accurate.

With 'GPS test', it's stable outdoor but indoor it's very unstable (like shown from previous owner) but for me it's not significant.
With wifi off, it's perhaps more stable, not sure.

So i'm happy at this time (because I was very bored with the iphone GPS), will wait for a firmware update to see if something is improve.

Mine is JF3

Where did you get your phone from?

Did you mean SUPL Secure Socket = OFF?

1) I'm in Denmark (copenhagen)
2) Sorry, yes I mean SUPL Secure Socket = OFF

Outdoor is great, SNR 30+ on all satelites, indoor OK but all below 30...

I'm on firmware version 2.1-update1, baseband JF5, kernelversion 2.6.29.

Seeing as we are comparing GPS performance I thought I would share a picture from My Tracks. The blue line is how I actually walked - would you guys say that this is good, ok or poor performance on my GPS's behalf?

map.jpg

As I was walking, the little marker sometimes spun around like crazy obviously having issues determining what direction I was walking, but maybe that is of lesser importance.

In case anyone wants to look ath the map, its available here:
Round The House - Google Maps

That is ok for a $49 device.

Unacceptable for a $500 phone.

And more so when you compare it with G1, a 2 years device that can pretty much nail your walk with pinpoint precision.

Sorry, this does not work for me.

Well, we'll see what happens when the new firmware comes out. Wish there was a way to get notified when that happens, the suspense is killing me.

@Beards, will you let us know when your Clove guy has some more information from Samsung?

Without doubt.... It's my main item in my daily 'hit list' of things To Do.

The last information I got was Clove sent off an email to the Samsung representative for him to telephone them at the beginning of this week.

I don't want to continually hit Clove as I know they will let me know the second they hear any updated news but regardless if I have not heard anything further by close of day Tuesday (tomorrow) I'll telephone Chris Love and ask him 'politely' what the state of play is. :)

Very good, we all await news patiently :)

Just this second received an update.... It's nothing new but at least it's confirmation Clove are pressing for an answer.

Mike
Thank you for the email,
We haven't yet received a response, but another email has been sent to the Samsung representative. Hopefully we will receive a response soon regarding the update for the Samsung Galaxy S i9000.

I've had trouble getting my GPS to work properly as well. I've tried rebooting.. tinkering with numerous settings, etc. After some research across the net I've found quite a few different approaches and ideas. Using a mix of all of them, I've come up with a solution that seems very effective with my Samsung Vibrant. I haven't had a chance to test extensively because I'm doing it from work..but so far so good.

**Not responsible if your GPS still doesn't work properly**

Go to settings->Location and Security-> Enable "Use GPS Satellites" and disable "Use wireless networks".

Go to Dialer and dial *#*#1472365#*#* - This is where you may cause harm if you're not careful. Only adjust the settings listed.
Under "Application settings" Change "Operation Mode" to MS Based
Go back
Under "SUPL/CP Settings" edit the "Server" test, and remove the "http://" leaving just www.spirent-lcs.com

That's it!
.

After getting and loving my Galaxy S, i took the GPS for a test drive and was bitterly disappointed with the results, it only locked once or twice in a 30 minute journey and not for more than 10s. (i hadn't heard of GPS test at the time)

Thats when i found this thread, i had a play with the settings last night and when i wen tout this morning it got a lock in about 30s and never lost it, so i am much happier now.

Here are the settings i used (more luck than judgement, but maybe they will help someone else)

Skyhook : on
Operation Mode: Msbased
Accuracy: 20
supl.google.com
port: 7276
no ssl
and disabled : Use wireless networks.

I dont know if all of these are necessary or not (i didnt test between changing) but the whole lot seems to have made a big difference.

When i first used GPS TEST (before changes), I got 1 Sat with no lock.
Now i get about 8-9 Sats with 5-6 locked.

I am also still using XJF3 that my phone came with.

Thanks to everyone who helped me get to this stage... hopefully this helps someone else..

EDIT: I am in the UK btw

I used these settings just to see if I could see any difference, initially with GPS Test I thought that there was maybe a slight difference to the better so I decided to make another walk around the office. This is the result:

Unfortunately this is actually worse. Now in defense of the new settings, today is a cloudy day - which might impede the GPS lock.*

*) - actually clouds do not affect GPS signals I learned later.

OK, I'm heading up to the Lakes District tomorrow to do some (or even all) of the Cumbria Way (weather permitting). I'll give these new settings a try and MyTracks the walk. Will post the results here.

I see an improvement too with these settings, although the accuracy is still around 98 ft, but does jump down sometimes to 30ft. Hope this JF6 update sorts the rest

(UK based)

I have not done any walk tests.

But FYI...just a short test in my back yard the other night, and the test indicated accuracy at 10'.

I am in U.S., and my phone is a Captivate, and has f6

I'm still seeing the same issue, a fairly quick lock but then any trees what so ever and it all goes to shit. I'm fearful the sensor in mine is defective I've never owned a GPS device this poor. I've had quite a few!

Alright. JF6 in the US here. GPS seems perfectly fine. Within 5 meters for standing still after about 15 seconds(not sure if it's using cell triangulation or anything, where do I check?). GPS test doesn't ever want to work however, it's annoying. Can anyone give me other testing apps?
