Help GPS issues?

NOOOO!! This is partiality! :P

Please can I see the timescale via PM?

Having said that, I've been on JM5 and the GPS has performed absolutely fine in MyTracks. It jumps around a bit when I'm sat in my house near a window but never beyond the end of my (small!) gardens.

:-)

(Also tried JPC but, as others have said, it's still a little slow and buggy, and no improvements over JM5 on the GPS side)
It's not partiality :)
The second I get to hear something relevant for you I will post.

The fixes will come, that I am very sure about.
It's just a case of how much damage along the way will Samsung continue to make before the damage stops.

So are you saying me and others in my situation should wait? If you have for-sure knowledge that this issue will be fixed then I can wait until at its latest the end of this month. though I'm unsure if its wise to get a device from a company that already frustrates me before ever having the device :P

I guess I will maybe give it another week or two to see if Samsung comes with a fix or atleast a clear promise on a fix.

I've looked and as far as I can see the Galaxy s will be the best phone out there if they get the software fixed, so for me I think its worth waiting, the super amoled is hands down the best there is, and I cant see any other brands rivalling it any time soon, at least until amolet breaks onto the scene.

Obviously I can't give you a cast iron confirmation it will happen on a specific date and that all the problems will vanish but I'm quite confident this is going to happen soon.
Samsung has a lot riding on the Galaxy S, they are aware the public are watching developments closely.

Agreed Stew,
Putting aside the issues of GPS, lag, wifi, etc. it is by far the leading Android phone on the market.
The camera alone is quite staggering and if you use third-party software such a PicSay Pro you can achieve results similar to those using Photoshop on a PC.

Just to let you know I've also asked Chris Love to keep in the picture.
I did mention to him it has been a while since he last obtained information.

Mike
I am on to this this morning.
Should get a reply from the product manager first thing tomorrow
I have already emailed him the problem yet again
It is crazy how long this is taking to resolve

Okay,
This will hopefully please you.
It's a reply from Samsung to parties myself, Chris & Richard at Clove

It now lets us know it will be a combined GPS Fix & Froyo release with an 'expected' date at the end of this month.
I know we were told some time back to expect it in September but this now stamps it as happening.

The bit about the 'non-talk' is my question I asked Samsung why they have been very silent in providing updated information.
I also explained to them via Clove that there is a strong lack in support service, giving no credible answers which in turn is hurting their name brand.

I'd love to see that Twitter page!!

Mike - you should have already received this reply
Hi Mike, (and Chris and Richard),

The latest information I have is that the GPS fix is included in the Froyo update which is currently being tested internally before release. This update will be available via home update on the Kies software. The current timeline for this is that it will be available at the end of September.

A buddy of mine just bought one today from Romania with Orange. While we were having a coffee today I got some time to play with the phone and downloaded two small apps from the Market to test the GPS. It got the location within seconds and what seemed to be a good gps fix. However, I don't know if I will have time to put igo on it and test it, this is one of the main reasons I'm looking to buy the phone. Tomorrow I have to pick up mine... and I don't know what to do.

The phone overall is great... I've wanted to wait for the iPhone 4 launch from Orange Romania but can't wait any more and this phone can't compare with 3GS , it's way over it.

Anyone using iGo My Way on Galaxy S with good results ?

Thanks,

Dan

Thank you Mr. Beards, did you point them towards this, and the XDA forum? Or maybe ask them to Google for Galaxy S GPS problem?
At this moment in time all I have done is pass down the two main sites (xda-devs & Adroidforums) where he will find opinion messages.
The reasoning behind this is I want to talk with him first before he goes in blind in order that he has a clear picture of events.
Basically I am trying to avoid him being blinded/confused and forming his own opinion.

OK, but if his own opinion is that there is no prblem then there is no hope ;-)

That's why I want to catch him first....
Having said that he is aware there are real issues because I went to length to make sure he understood ~ members feeling frustrated both with their hardware and the service/lack of it Samsung have given.

Also, just in case any representatives are reading this ;) - some of us are waiting to see whether this update arrives and fixes the problems, before deciding whether to buy a Galaxy S, or some other phone instead...

and some of us are waiting before replacing our Galaxy S's with an HTC phone and then not buying a Samsung one again....

I just come from a Nokia n900 and I don't know if any of you heard but they (nokia) is "killing" off the OS Maemo 5 and switching to Meego. I had heard that Nokia was notorious for their "non-talk" kind of way but I was very surpriced of how they managed to almost kill of a thriving comunity with their silence. They scared alot of people away, not so much with their lack of suport more with not talking thus creating uncertainty and frustration. So when the choice for a new phone stood between an Android or the new Nokia N8 it was an easy one. I for one am done with Nokia (I like their products hat... eh dislike the company) Long story short: I must say I got a bit of a deja vu when we heard nothing from Samsung on the GPS issue other than "what there is a problem, we never heard of that... [long pause] we'll "get back to you" on that... [Silence]

Well ... I have my Galaxy S for a day now. I've installed Motonav on it using the latest iGO maps for Romania (2010.03 from TopMap). So far so good, the phone gets a gps fix in a matter of seconds and stays that way. I didn't tested it too much, probably a 20 km route around my town but it went well. I only had a small issue with Motonav: while navigating, I touched the screen to switch the 3d+ view with 2D and then the phone stuck. Who knows why ...

Other than that, no troubles at all. I bought the phone on a 2 year contract with Orange Romania and it has I9000XXJM1 baseband and firmware 2.1-update1. The phone has been since then rooted + lag fix but the test was made prior the root.

Hopefully I will get the original iGO App for Android since I don't like too much the GUI of Motonav.

Good luck.

Can someone please remind me how many satellites I should 'see' and how many I should be able to lock on to?

I put JM7 on my SGS last night, and this morning I put the phone on the dashboard when I drove a couple of miles to the shop. I was getting a very steady 11 in view and 11 locked on - most with decent green SNR in GPS test.

Haven't tried anything like MyTracks yet, but I thought the SGS was only supposed to see / use 8 sats.

Cheers.

I am waiting for the same reason.

11 in use is very good in comparison to mine. If they are green, not yellow even better.

Thats only part of the story though, as some of the SGS GPS problems are down to processing the info to get a steady lock. The best test is to set My Tracks running and go for a walk / drive around town.

Paddy,
Also check to see what SNR figures you are actively picking up satellites.

I'm sat here with it now in the garden, and it's showing 10 in view / 10 in use.

I have 3 locked on dead steady at 42 SNR, a few at 35+ and a couple hovering around 19 (orange) and 20 (green). Accuracy still flicks occasionally from 16.4 feet to 32.8 feet, but it has me correctly placed, outside my shed at the end of the garden.

It certainly *feels* more reliable, and MyTracks is giving some perfect tracks (I will upload some later). It does have the occasional glitch where it has me cutting a corner through some houses but not very often.

Incidentally, I tried to flash to JM8 this morning but it wasn't playing .. will try again later.

Cheers
Dave.
