Help GPS issues?

Hmm, I'm sceptical too.

If it was originally going to be this week then that might explain T-Mobile getting all excited and announcing it but a delay to October sounds all too likely.

The longer it takes the less I believe it's really just a software bug. The only thing that realistically takes months to 'fix', is trying to come up with better error-correction algorithms and other trickery to compensate for a faulty hardware design.

I just spoke with Samsung Sweden, and it is very clear that they now next to nothing compared to our collective knowledge here on the forum. When I let her know that the new, although rumored, "unofficial" date was the 20th of October she got very sad and frustrated. Reminds me of our own Helpdesk who is last to know what really is going on. She was embarrassed that the forum community knew more than her. I said that she should convey that message to her superiors - what a joke support has turned into.

Can't say that I don't sympathize with her.

I know.... very frustrating to say the least.

From another angle, after a recent communication with Samsung I was informed the best method to obtain info was to tweet @samsungukmobile where one would receive a better response.

What a load of internally digested rubbish.
They have not once come back to my tweets.

As such I'm relying on my safer, friendly & reliable 'source'.

I'd say the best thing would probably be if as many people as possible who own a faulty Galaxy would simply return it and demand a full refund based on not meeting its own basic specifications. As long as people are keeping their faulty devices instead of return them, and more people still buy it every day, its simply not ever going to be a priority for Samsung to address the issue.

The only missed income for them is people who simply refuse to buy a broken handset and are waiting and/or choosing other brands, but thats not even a visible parameter for them, where people returning the malfunctioning product would be.
The impression I get is noone is really satisfied with the performance of the SGS yet people aren't returning them en masse. Words don't speak so loud in multimillion corporative world, even when it's complaining customers.

I actually agree with you.
What I would suggest is everyone who has issues with their phone to send an email to whoever they purchased their phones from and simply say "unless this is not sorted soon I shall return my phone as it does not meet the purpose it was purchased for".
With so many doing this it would make sellers sit up and take notice and contact Samsung informing them they could lose a lot of trade.
Call their bluff.......

I've got a new unlocked unbranded generic Galaxy S operating on 3 UK, and AFAICT the GPS in it is working just fine. Certainly as good as the GPS in my previous Nokia E71 phone.

Firmware: 2.1-update1
Baseband: I9000XXJF3
Kernel: 2.6.29 umts_scm@S1-BUILD05 2
Build: Eclair

I think it's allready not sorted:rolleyes:

Another big update for Kies today, added a prompt for saving contacts when pressing the firmware button. So at least it *seems* like they are preparing for an update.

Also added a "ToWeb" function for social media

Yes, these updates are the one's promised yesterday...... They took the option of not including Froyo & the other main fixes because of the late problems found and as such this will now come later.

There's no specific date but it could be the end of the month.

Hi Beards,

If Froyo and (presumably) GPS/lag fixes aren't included, what exactly is in this update? Just minor bugfixes?

Also, don't suppose you know if the mic sensitivity issue is at least on their agenda, do you?

thanks!

As Karnka mentions... in the end the update that came was for Kies.
The initial intention was for both Kies & Froyo. However, there was nothing to stop the Kies from being updated and as such that should have carried through.

As to Mic sens... It's not mentioned. I'll see if I can find out.

Where is the new Kies available from?

Thanks Beards. I assume the leaked XXJPK is the Froyo build that would have been released, other than for the last-minute problem you mentioned earlier? Sounds like lag and GPS might well have been sorted in that...

I was going to wait for official Froyo before deciding whether or not to buy a Galaxy, but it sounds close enough now that I might just go ahead anyway. Desire HD is the only complicating factor, but no TV-out, TFT LCD, and dubious-looking camera quality all mean I'm not as tempted by it as I was initially. Decisions, decisions!

I'm still seriously considering getting rid of my Galaxy S for a Desire HD. HTC just seem to be a whole lot more 'together' in dealing with the software side of things.

In my mind, I'll get a lower quality screen, but a bigger screen, not fussed about the TV out, and haven't heard much about the HDs camera but it does have a flash. So, hardware wise it's probably very close for me, software wise.... there'll be a world of difference.

Obviously it'll cost me a bit to swap so I guess I'll wait till I can go and play with an HD in the flesh and then we'll see.

Unfortunately I can not say what the ROM version is sorry....

As to the Desire HD ~ Although it is a nice piece of hardware you are quite correct in what you say.
HTC are known for NOT providing great cameras and having seen a 720p video taken with the DHD all I can say is I was very unimpressed.
Let's face it, the SGS has one of the lowest f-stop sensor's available which then mean you can achieve some very good low light photography and video work.
I recently video's my granddaughter's bithday at night and watching my daughter carry her cake with the only light coming from those few candles.
This made for one beautiful video that only my Panasonic LX3 camera could have beaten.
For those unsure as to the Panasonic LX3 ~ it is spoken of as the Professionals compact, with it's ultra-low 2.0 f-stop which creats stunning night photography.

Hmm.. interesting about the camera but I guess I'm not _that_ bothered. I only tend to use my phone for quick snaps/videos.

If the camera doesn't bother you then yes, it's a great phone with some very good features........ and a much better customer support & update service.

The photo's from the DHD did worry me though.... No wonder it needs a dual LED Flash.

I think I'll have to take a look at some sample shots from it. It wouldn't bother me if they weren't great, it might bother me if they were terrible! :)

Anyway, still hoping we see this SGS update in a few weeks time as it might make the difference...

Yeah, it's a tricky one; I think it's mostly minor differences really, and depends what you personally want from a phone.

I find TV-out very handy for showing off photos when visiting family etc, and also useful when in hotels and so on. My N95 camera has taken some really great pics, which people are always surprised to learn are from a phone, and 5MP has been perfectly adequate. I tend to take lots of pics, too, and am a bit anal about not deleting anything. So to be honest, I think >5MP (on a current camera phone, at least) is almost a negative, as it's gobbling up storage space on the image files, for dubious gain. Image quality is more important than MP, to me, and it looks like the DHD probably isn't going to greatly improve on HTC's indifferent performance in this area. (Pity about the Galaxy's mic sensitivity issue, but hopefully that'll be rectified at some point, as it does seem to be a software problem...)

Listening to music is another big thing for me, and I understand the Galaxy S is excellent in this regard too, whereas HTC's previous phones haven't been too great on audio quality (from what I've read, at least).

Re the screen - I actually went into a shop several months ago, with the intention of walking out with a (pre-HD) Desire. The guy in there recommended I wait for the Galaxy S (wasn't yet out), because of the screen, which I said I wasn't particularly bothered about. He then showed me a Wave they'd just got in, and I must admit, I was taken aback by how good the display looked, to the extent that I did indeed not buy the Desire that day ;) The DHD screen is only going to be 0.3" bigger, so ~1/7th extra in area, and has the same resolution, and I personally like vivid colours, so for me, this is possibly still a Galaxy win. Or a draw ;)

Absence of camera flash is annoying, but I very rarely use it on my N95 (in fact, I'm more often re-taking photos after manually overriding it to 'off', when the first photo has been washed out). I'll probably miss it occasionally, but there you go.

Lack of notification LED seems like a stupid oversight, but again, this isn't a critical feature for me, just would have been nice to have.

Offline maps is probably the main Desire HD plus for me. Again, something I take for granted with my N95. I would miss this on a Galaxy. However, I know Google are working on it, so I'm fervently hoping they get it sorted soon. Otherwise I guess I can dabble in the murky world of 3rd party satnav apps, hmm ;)

Take your point about the general software side of things. But Samsung (up to now, at least) do seem to have been working constantly on things, and there's a steady stream of unofficial releases coming out, which seem to offer incremental improvements. I'd be a lot more worried if there was nothing to see, other than promises of one giant fix-all upgrade coming "any day now". The 'remote wipe' etc type features of new Sense look good, but I don't like the idea of HTC storing all my texts in the cloud for me, will that be optional? I appreciate other people aren't bothered about that sort of stuff though.

The other concern is that I'd expect the DHD to get at least Gingerbread, whereas I'm not sure about the Galaxy. But it sounds like Honeycomb is going to be a bigger deal, and that's going to be a good way off yet.

Just my current thoughts anyway, I'm still debating it myself ;)

Lots of useful points in there, thanks.

As you say, a tricky one. In a couple of weeks or so I can hopefully find one in the wild and try and work this out.
