Gentlemen/Ladies.
Firstly, thanks to all of you for your inout and sharing of knowledge.
I have just upgraded to 2.2, via KEIS. I am on Orange and this is an official upgrade. Apart from having to get rid of the links to Orange Apps again, it all seems good. (Fingers crossed!). I just got a much more accurate position than before in Google maps. I will try location etc later. Also, file lag seems to be much better than before. It was opening the phone/contacts that seemed to take an age sometimes but it's pretty immediate now.
Could they have finally made a good phone great?

Dear all,
I didn't finish reading all the msgs. yet I understand why my GPS has never worked (I thought the cause is from mapdroyd, but actually not! It is this bloody machine!). I bought it from Germany in January 2011 and I have many complaints about it. not only GPS but also Kies - how can they sell such premature things ?! (It was even recommended by some friends who are working for Alcatel Luchent in Belgium).

I'll try the solutions in the poll and hopefully won't be disappointed.

I love the Galaxy S but have an issue with the GPS Navigation - does anyone know if it should work without both 3G and WIFI? I thought it should pick up the satellites like a normal GPS (Garmin etc)? However, I spoke with Samsung support twice and the last time they informed me you must have either WIFI or 3G. Is this correct? While driving Galaxy S says "getting directions....." but never does. Yet, I can still see the map of the area I am driving through. Strange? Incidentally it works flawlessly (so far!) when 3G data services are enabled. Oh, by the way, the first time I contacted Samsung support they said the problem was I needed to upgrade to android 2.2.1 which I did (and, obviously, it made no difference).

Dumb & dumber! Just realised my error. You do need 3G (or WIFI) as the driving directions service comes from Google - not from the satellites! With a Garmin dedicated GPS they have that service built in. I should have figured that one out before now. However, why didn't Samsung tech support clearly explain that in the first place? Oh well, I still love the Galaxy S.:D

I'm replying to my own posts! Just discovered that if you load your driving instructions (with WIFI) in Navigation before you set out on your journey, it will hold in memory and see you to your destination without 3G data services.

That's because of the new Google Map app. It introduces cache that allows offline map viewing. Of course, it's best to load the driving instructions before leaving to ensure that the essential part of the map is in the cache.

I went out, started the test and gave it 1 minute. I got 10 satellites with an average bar of 40.
Just got the HTC lightning and checked the gps with the above test. I had 10 to 11 Satellites, well over half bar and accuracy between 16 and 22 feet. Realize I'm in the south west U.S.A. and ran test about 2:06 UTC
Looks like it will be a winner.

There are many Samsung Galaxy S users with a GPS so horrible, that some of them might chuck their handsets out of the window for their Google Maps giving up on them altogether. Well, in case you are getting any such ideas, then think again, because our friend Saad at Wccftech is out with a fix for Galaxy S

The GPS based on Samsung Galaxy S gets updated from time to time, but we won't have too many information about some areas since Google Maps didn't update their records on some Eastern European countries and other places.

Hi
My GPS simply disconnects... after detecting satelites (1 or 2) it just simply disconnects !!! I don't understand why.
Even in LbsTestMode (*#*#3214789650#*#*) Test Application > H/W Test > Antenna Test

The icon on the top starts blinking, then some numbers appears in the Antenna Test (Current CNo, Average CNO, etc...) and after a few seconds the icon simply dessapear and the values in the CNO dessapear too...

Using Ndrive or Endomondo, happens the same... starts for a few seconds and then stops.

Can someone help me ?

Thanks in advance
Best Regards.

I believe that the problem with the GPS is physical. From another forum I checked that a temporary solution is to take silver foil fold it up small and place it between the back cover and the casing of the internal antenna. It does work insofar that it picks up a lot more satellites, but the GPS is still unstable. There is a permanent solution, however. Follow the link to a youtube video and the issue is explained for the Samsung Vibrant. I do not know if this is the same for the Galaxy: I have not tried it yet. I've got to get to a technician that will be willing to do it.

Remember, since I have not tried it I cannot be responsible for any damage to your phone. This is not for the novice.

Let's hope it works and get that issue out of the way.

Thanks
