Help Gps locks up

Danny1st

Newbie
Update to gingerbread ei11 via zip flash, stock no root. Now gps locks up after 2-5 min of use on google maps. Also, locking only 2-4 out of 10 satellites using gps test? Wtf, is there a fix?

I noticed odd GPS behavior yesterday. Used Google maps for a few minutes. Got a lock quickly, but when I was done the GPS indicator ever went away when I exited maps. My battery seemed to run out much faster than usual too.

Rebooting seemed to fix it, but it will probably happen again next time I use maps.

Same thing for me. Lots of people are having the problem, based on comments on xda and androidcentral forums.

I am not sure how to get this information to the right people at Sprint / Samsung. If I call customer support, I am sure I will just get a front line person and my info won't go anywhere. It would be good for the right people at Sprint / Samsung to know about this problem so that they might issue a fix.

I know, I can hear the laughter at me saying Sprint / Samsung might release a fix for this, but I guess it is possible.....

Reboot will only temporarily fix gps. Tried reboot and even hard reset. Gps still freezes after 2-5 min. of use. This is very disappointing. I was so impressed with the update; phone was so responsive, battery life was extended... And now this! I hope they resolve this issue

My GPS has always been a bit wonky on the Epic 4g ... hate to hear that apparently it's going to be worse. Seeing that some are requiring a hard reset to resolve some issues with the Gingerbread push ... I'm not a smart phone aficionado, so thought I'd ask about this.

I've never done a hard reset ... are my contacts automatically saved onto my SD card or is there steps I need to take to back those up?

Thanks in advance for the info ...

In most cases, your contacts are a part of your Gmail account. Log in to that and look for your contact list. If they are all there, then your phone will get the contacts back, when you sync with Gmail.

I think it's also possible to store come contacts to your phone's internal memory. Unless you move them first, they aren't guaranteed to be saved.

Does anyone know if doing a hard reset fixes the GPS issues? I don't want to waste my time doing a hard reset if it doesn't even fix the issue.

No, tried hard reset via three button and dial code reset. Gps locks up within 5 minutes of use and only locks 2-3 satellites out of 12. Any and all help for a solution would be appreciated!

Just got off the phone with Sprint Tech support.. Whoopeee... His fix is to do a factory reset/wipe.. Hes saying there were alot of problems with the installations, producing such diverse problems as dropped calls, blanked screens, gps issues, charge light issues, etc, etc.. Their answer for everyone is to wipe the phone and do a reinstall of Gingerbread. He claims that with a properly installed gingerbread, there are no gps problems.

Anybody buy it? Sure would hate to wipe and re set up my phone again to no avail...

Update:

Just factory reset the phone, went for a ride, and now, finally, Gingerbread is working the way its supposed to.. Nav used to lose the gps signal after 3 minutes regularly. In 20 minutes test, the signal is strong as can be and no gps signal losses. Phone seemed to lock onto at least half of the satellites as opposed to 10 to 20% before the reset.

What a botched up rollout this turned out to be! Im waiting for a Honeycomb rollout for my Google tv with Logictech hardware. I hope this turns out to be more successful when it comes!

Even after several factory resets, my GPS was still wonky. Finally went ahead and installed a custom recovery mod, then flashed the XDA GPS fix as shown in the videos. Now my GPS works as it should. Locks on to all available sats, and doesn't lock up any more. Even works indoors now. Before, whenever I had the GPS enabled on my Epic, the battery would drain even when plugged into my car charger. Now, after applying the above fix, my Epic's battery actually charges while plugged in now. Very happy with this update.

Please explain this process.. what is a 'custom recovery mod'? And is this procecdure for rooted or non rooted phone.. Thanks..

Stock Epic/ROM -

Had the same issue (Post GB, GPS would only work for 2-10 minutes, then revert to "Searching for GPS...")

Took to Sprint store, they, of course, did the "Hard Reset" and sent me on my way. This, of course, did NOTHING, as it failed again on the way home about 10 minutes in...

I followed Post #190 from this link in the Sprint Community.

Once you are able to view your Epic as a Mass Storage Device (that's the first hurdle and requirement), the rest is VERY easy.

Been running IN MY HOUSE for > 1 hour, no loss of GPS...looks VERY promising...

You need these files:
"Samsung_Mobile_Driver_V1.3.800_For_SPH-d700_Epic_4G.zip"
"Odin3-v1.85.zip"
"GPS_FIX.zip"
"ACSRecovery1.0.0.5.tar.tar" (probably others - this is what I used)
I can email all if needed...

I leveraged the knowledge and experience of others, so don't ask me tech details - the above worked for me...

Is this step by step for nonrooted phones?
does it wipe out your data, apps, and settings?
what is the preferred site from which to download these gps fix files?

thanks.

ZERO data loss.

This is for NON-ROOTED phones (I'm running the 'stock' Epic - I don't want to root).

It took < 5 minutes...(if that).

PM if you'd like me to email the files I used to you...
