GPS/Navigation questions

Hello folks,

I have 3 years old dumb Garmin GPS units that sends me on parkways and highways for a small stretches when there are alternate, equally short, routes available.

I would like to use my HTC One X to record the path that I drive on and save it as a route. I would like Navigation to use this saved route, next time I select same starting point and the destination. Is this possible?

If yes, didactic instructions/application info is welcome.

Thanks in advance.

PS - I do not have data service on my phone, I am wi-fi only guy.

Copilot does what you are talking about i believe, but if you want voice guided navigation you have to upgrade from the free version.

One thing you should be cautious about with not have mobile data. If the navigation just saves your route, and you miss a turn you could be unable to get navigation back to your route. Make sure whatever solution you find will be able to correct your route as you go or you'll find yourself on a side street somewhere without knowing where your are or where you're going.

That happened to you too, huh? Yeah, very stressful. Feels kinda 'nude', exposed. Just like the feeling when you discover you forgot to put on your watch that morning. And you're miles from home! BRR!

Anyway, I just discovered this free GPS app Polaris Navigation System that seems to be able to record routes with waypoints and such. Still have to dig into it myself, but you guys and gals might wanna have a peek at it too.

You should probably check out Polaris Navigation System. It looks like the free version of its $4.00 cousin and has all the functionality with the exception of being able to store only 2 routes and two waypoints at a time (I got around this by deleting a route or waypoint that I no longer use and replace it with a new route or waypoint). It does nice trailing and has some other pretty cool features.

I agree with the recommendation of using CoPilot. The paid version is very good and it does not require a data connection for anything, including routing. They make quarterly updates to the maps and the package works very well. You can save google map tiles to your phone and I believe you can now save routes to your phone from google (I may be wrong,) but google nav does require a data connection to do any routing at all, including rerouting should you stray from your path.

I have HTC One X and do not have data plan. I have been able to use Navigation without any troubles. I agree that I do not totally rely on it. I have Garmin GPS too but the preference for saving route is important because Garmin acts really weird at a times.

Do you still think CoPilot would mess it up without data?

As has been said, Copilot does NOT need a data connection! Everything is local to your phone, you just need to switch on GPS which, in case you were wondering, does also NOT use any of your data connection.

I use CoPilot without data all the time. All the maps are local on the device, so if you "detour" it keeps up with you. Navigation on the other hand works fine without data IF you don't lose your way or make a detour at which point it becomes as lost as you are until you get back on the stored route. It will, however, show you where you are on the map, but it just reports you as being off route.

I may be misunderstanding your statement, but CoPilot will reroute you w/o a data connection, if you make a wrong turn. The only thing you need a data connection for is traffic and looking up things with Google. All the maps are stored on the device or SD card. So make sure you have enough space.
