GPS on or off?

A guy at the sprint store told me to keep it on, says it helps things run more smoothly etc and doesnt hurt battery life...what service does it serve as if you are not using GPS to find your way around? It seems in a lot of reviews of the Shift, I notice the GPS is on and doesn't have the strike through (\) the GPS thing at the top.

Thoughts?

I turn my GPS off unless I need it. Both of my phones drink battery if the GPS is turned on constantly.

I am in the leave it on camp. Although I do know it drains battery I usually end the day with about 30-35% battery left anyway and always charge my phone while I sleep. I like my weather(though I can't remember exactly if weather uses GPS or cell towers now that I think about it) and other services that use location to work when I need them without thinking about turning GPS on and waiting for a lock.

I turn wifi off when I leave the house in morning and I leave 4G off most of the time. I am either working in a basement that has a full 3G connection thanks to a booster of some kind but no 4G connection or I am at home on my wifi.

My days consist of 20 minutes ride to and from work either browsing the net or playing games. A 30 minute lunch hour doing the same. Then from about 8pm until bed(usually midnight) I am doing various things like browsing, playing games(emulators) or testing out tethering apps etc.

Anyway yeah, this post got longer than I thought it would.

I've kept it on, on the Shift, and am not noticing any drop as opposed to not on - I don't let the web keep track of my location, so while the switch is on, GPS itself isn't until I use Maps.

I agree here. With JUST the GPS on it does nothing to the battery. It's the apps that use the GPS that destroy your battery.

Agreed. And, BTW, weather does work w/GPS off. 4G is the major juice drainer. Switch it off if you don't need it.

Decisions, decisions... I like the localized results, but I like my battery life Why does Google have to give us so many choices! I wish Sergey was more like Steve sometimes...
