How can I turn on the GPS without seeing an indication that is on?

Only way to do it is to root, as far as I know.
What device do you have? Even using CyanogenMod on my phones, it still shows up.

Hi

I think if rooted you can do this using the Xposed framework + Statusbar Mods SGS and substitute a blank icon for the GPS icon (but I have actually done it)
