Help GPS use without web connection

roytom

Newbie
Hi All,

with the OSF I wondered if its possible to use the GPS function without the use of wifi at the same time - I don't have a data tariff for my mobile, just payg talk.

What I assume is happening with Google maps is that they are downloaded on the fly and not installed on the phone - is this right?

Thanks, Roy

roytom - did you sort this?
I'm in the same situation. I'm on payg, and although I don't want to pay either, the coverage round here (I'm in the Wye valley) is poor anyway so I just get 'data connection lost' when I try and use Google maps/GPS.

I believe that the maps are cached to your phone when you plan a route. So, for example, if you are at home on wi-fi then you can set a destination and the required maps will be cached to your phone. You should then be able to use it without a data connection. However, if you significantly deviate from the route or want to add an additional destination then you will require a data connection again. You also wont get traffic updates and such.

Alternatively, you could purchase something like Co-Pilot which doesn't require a data connection.

No, I never did get this sorted - but the idea the maps are cached sounds good. I'll give it a try soon.

I have GPS working without internet.
Simply download NDrive 11 with maps and disable net in your OSF.
I have one and working very well.
