GPS whilst roaming (no maps required)

I'm working in the US for a month and I'd really like to be able to get a GPS fix without having roaming data.

I don't care massively about having a GPS fix and using Google Maps, although it would be nice. I'm mostly trying to use the GPS to track my running whilst I'm out here (i'm training so would like to get accurate minutes/mile and be able to pace myself). For this surely I just need the ability to get a GPS fix?

I have Google Maps pre-cached anyway, using the Labs feature, but I have not been able to get a GPS fix using either maps or my running application (RunKeeper). I keep being told I've run 0 miles!

I've tried doing a search, but all results seemed to talk about using GPS and cached maps. I don't even care about maps, I just want a relative GPS fix. I'm got a UK Galaxy S2 running ICS (although I didn't get anything whilst roaming in Kiev under Gingerbread either).

Have a look at Maverick.
The app lets you store your choosen area in Maps like quality on your SD card. You can do this via WiFi at home.
While running Maverick doesn't need a data connection because it's using the pre-stored maps.
While running the app records the tracks and their profiles.

EDIT: Re-read your post ;)
SpeedView (same dev) doesn't need a map at all while running, I think :)

But there are more "speed" apps, better search with "speed" instead of "running" in Market/Play Store.

Thanks for the reply. I tried SpeedView and it looked like it was going to work, showed me that it had identified 4 or 5 GPS satellites, but it just sat there trying to obtain a GPS fix. Basically, it seems to have the same issue, I imagine it must be an Android one, but I can't find any info about it.

This is getting really frustrating! Do you also need 3G data to translate the info? I was on WiFi at home with satellites detected but still no GPS fix!

With my old Desire HD I had this issue too sometimes.

My work-arround was to start Mike Lookwood's 'GPS Test', get a sat lock and let the app running in background while starting and using my primary navi app.

And next time the navi app got a sat lock by itself :)
