Help GPS won't toggle ON anymore

I've been using my Optimus V for about a month now and today when I tried to use the navigation I couldn't get the GPS to toggle on. Wouldn't come on and display even the on status in the status bar. I'd been using the power widget but also couldn't get it to come on with changing the status thru the menu settings.

I'm new to Android and only have a few apps but though it was maybe one of those so tonight I ended up uninstalling ALL my apps, one by one, and rebooting after each - no luck. Then I decided what the heck and did the factory reset - still no GPS icon in the status bar and no GPS. (turned the phone off and removed the battery for 15+ minutes which didn't help either).

It did work fine when I first got the phone because I used it for navigation a couple times and did see the GPS icon when I turned it on and saw the icon indicating that it was communicating. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions what to try next???? Think I just have a defective phone???

I did have trouble at the beginning of the month with VM dropping my data connection and getting a no server connection message, but I contacted them and the data is working OK now and I'm assuming that VM doesn't have anything to do with the GPS on toggle . . .

Thanks - I really love this little smart phone!!

Click the Menu button, then Settings, then Location and Security, and make sure GPS is enabled/checked. Open up an application like Maps or Navigation. If you don't see the satellite dish in the taskbar at that point, then there is likely an issue with the GPS chip in the phone. Hopefully it's just that it's been turned off, and you'll be able to turn it back on.

Dang, what a moron - I just tried to navigate and the icon came up and it worked fine. It didn't work today when I was trying to navigate and the GPS icon wasn't coming up in the status bar even though I had gone thru settings and enabled/checked it. Guess I wasn't getting the satellite signals where I was today but then thought the icon would appear once I toggled it on (just like turning on the BT, or WiFi) but guess the icon only appears in the status bar once you're using the GPS??

Anyway seems to be working fine now when in a map program - thanks so much for your help!!! :D

The GPS normally remains off unless you're in an app that uses it, such as Navigation. It's usually best to leave the master switch in Settings on so it's ready to go when you need it. It will switch itself off when you exit the app that does.

Glad that worked for you.

Yeah, now I've got the Web Android Market not showing the phone associated with my account. But sounds like many others are having similar problems with the Web Market.

Well at least I can access my purchased apps from the phone and have been able to install from there so all is not lost!! Guess I have forgotten the many issues when the Treo700 was new.
