If you enable gps on your phone the gps receiver will work when an app that uses gps needs it to locate your phone. Many apps use gps - the most common being satellite navigation apps.
To use GPS you need an appropriate GPS app, dozens of which are available in Play Store, ranging from basic GPS status apps to full blown mapping & navigation apps.
Probably the best known is Google Maps, which by virtue of being a Google product is to be found on all Android devices.
You will find that most apps are free to download, some with paid for options, which remove ads and/or provide additional functionality.
Depending on what you want to use GPS for, you will almost certainly find apps to achieve it.
