Help Grey Circle with opposing arrows Next to 3g notification

At the very top of my LG Optimus Elite, Virgin Mobile phone, I occasionally get a grey symbol its round and has one arrow point up and the other pointing down. When I get this, I normally have data connection issues, but am just curious if anyone knows what this symbol represents?

Doesn't it say "3G" under it? If you loose connectivity and no "3G", I'm guessing it means you lost your 3G connection.

Is it the arrows that form the circle? If so that's the phone syncing with whatever accounts you have set to sync on your phone.

Darn, I was thinking the same thing, but they made it sound like they were pointing straight up and down, so I guessed the other.
