Group Messaging

Hello Everyone

I volunteer for a Fire Dept, and my Supervisor got a new phone, Android Phone, A change from an iphone (yay!)

He needs to group text message all of us volunteers (40 of Us)
previously he would send 4 sets of 10 messages (Apparently 10 is the max amount in a group message)

He wants to send messages to 40 at once, is there an app that supports group messages to up to 40 people ?

Thanks for your help.

Google Hangouts will do it. It acts like a combination chat room / messaging app. You can text people just like SMS, or group message. I've been in one upwards of 100 people.

But will Google hangouts send a message as a text message ? Will iPhone users get it ? He doesn't want an app that everyone has to download

Yes. At the bottom where you enter the message you have the option of choosing to send to a G+ account or to the phone # (SMS / MMS)

Well just tested hangouts. It makes you have to have the app. So the doesn't work
Only the person using it to send the texts has to have it. It's like any other messaging app really.

There are different ways to use it though. If you sign in with your Google account you can utilize full-blown Hangouts for video calls etc., then others would need it too. If you don't sign through Google and set it up as SMS only then it acts just like any messaging app and no one else needs it. That's the way I use it.

As for the iPhone folks, yes, they will get any messages sent. It's getting them back that can be trouble. If they are using iMessage and sending (new) messages that way you may never see them. If they reply to a message or create one without iMessage then everything will be fine. That's not a Hangouts thing though, it's across the board (and seriously annoying!).
