Depending on which messaging app you are using, it is likely to be a setting. I was having an issue sending an SMS to more than 1 people at a time... it would always send as an MMS. I finally worked out that I needed to change the settings within the app I use to send messages.
When you're in your messaging app, hit menu, settings and then you should see an option under Advanced - Group Messaging... I had to untick a box that was set to use MMS to send a message when there are multiple recipients.
