Help GS3 Activation Fails

Hi,
I just got a GS3 today and it goes into activation mode after the language selection but fails to complete. It runs for a couple of hours before stopping and giving me the error message. I've gone through the process a number of times and finally pulled the battery and restarted with the same result. Is there a manual way to do this or fix?

Are you porting a number from an old phone to the S3? I had a problem with that, and had to call my carrier (Credo-Sprint); they were able to nudge the process along and get things going.

When I got my GS3 new, I missed the info on activating the SIM chip first. I took it to a Verizon store -- where they did that. Once the SIM chip is activated, phone activation takes place automatically after that.
