Help GS3 Stock Gallery Face Tagging Issue

Nick-B

Newbie
Hi,

In the stock GS3 gallery (I have an unrooted International GS3 running 4.1.2 but I'm sure this problem happened when I was using 4.0.x) I have face tagged my photos with the people from my contacts list, however on a number of occasions, this tag data has simply disappeared and I have had to retag all of the photos.

Today, I noticed that this has happened again and I can't think of anything that I've done that could have caused it, the SD card has not been removed or unmounted, I haven't moved the photos to another folder (I know that moving them will understandably loose the tag information), the phone has been rebooted recently but I've rebooted before without loosing the tag information.

I had a separate issue earlier in the year which resulted in my phone being wiped and rebuilt under warranty and this issue definitely occurred both before and after this event, leading me to believe that it's a software issue and not something particular to my handset.

So, a few questions:

1) Has anyone else experienced this? And if so, are there any known solutions?

2) Is it possible to backup the tag data so that it can be easily restored? I assume an app such as Titanium Backup would do this but this requires root access. Is there a non-root option?

3) Are there any alternative gallery apps that allow face tagging from your contacts that I could use instead (I've tried out several gallery alternatives but not found any that have face tagging)?

Any help/thoughts appreciated.

Have you cleared the gallery cache? that might have done it??

Have you cleared the gallery cache? that might have done it??

Thanks for your suggestion.

I do use App Cache Cleaner now and then, however I have just run a test where I tagged a few photos, looked at the Gallery in the stock Application Manager, ran App Cache Cleaner and then looked at the Application Manager and photos again. There was no change, the tagged photos remained tagged and the cache was constant at 165MB.

I believe that the cache will only store thumbnail data, to allow you to quickly scroll through your pictures. In my opinion, data like tagging should really be stored in the application data.

I did notice one other thing whilst retagging the photos, the ones which lost their tags all appear to be from the external SD card and not the internal memory/SD card.

It seems that not many people have experienced this issue, that being the case, does anyone have a favoured gallery app that they use instead of the stock app (ideally with face tagging but if not then I'd still be interested to hear of any other feature-rich apps)?

Thanks

It's happened again, all my tags for photos on my SD card have disappeared. What I believe might be the cause is that I powered off my phone for a few minutes this morning - it tends to run better if its turned off and on every now and then. A reboot doesn't seem to cause this problem, just a full power off and on - seems strange that the data would be lost in one case but not the other:confused:

I'd still be interested to know if anyone has found any alternative gallery apps that enable you to tag your contacts.
