Help GT540 contacts widget needed

Currently my son and daughter are both on android 1.6 (I have asked for advice about upgrading)..

But are there any good contacts widgets available for them on 1.6 ?

we have tried a couple but none of them seem to allow us to select the contact !!

Don't know if thats available on Android 1.6 but you should be able to add a contact shortcut to your home screen. I'm using CM7 and when I go to shortcuts menu, I have a "Direct Call" and "Direct message" icon that I can pair with a contact.
