This Fall GTAIII will come to Android. w00t!

Pretty limited selection of phones. Glad that I have a tablet on that list. If I remember correctly, that game was really hard on PS2. I will definitely be buying it day one.

You'd probably have to use Chainfire3D, since none of the listed phones use the OMAP processor the Thrill has. The article does say that more devices will be supported though:

To commemorate the game’s 10th anniversary, we’re proud to announce that Grand Theft Auto III will be coming to select new generation iOS and Android devices later this fall. For the lineup of devices currently confirmed to be supported at launch, check the list below and stay tuned for more devices to be announced:

This is awesome news though!

Since fall is September to November, it could be here tomorrow, it could be here in six weeks. That's assuming they meet their deadline. If they're anything like Blizzard, don't expcet it for another two years. :p

Disappointed that the Nexus S won't get it. But wow, GTA III being ported to mobile phones? I would have never imagined it back then when I was playing it on my big and boxy PS2.

GTA III was the first non-top down GTA. I friggin love GTA. Are the top down ones available?

Here's hoping that they decide to include the sensation in that list

EDIT : Actually, I tried China Town Wars on the iphone. I hope to god the gameplay is better than that one.

SECOND EDIT : Just read another piece about GTA III which suggests end of October as a launch date....so any day now.

The "EVO 2" or EVO 3D that they say is supported, has basically the same hardware as the Sensation (slightly more RAM though) so it is highly likely that it will be available for the Sensation.

Yeah, I wasn't a big fan of China Town Wars. Hopefully, the developers can improve upon the controls. Hopefully, it will be a direct port of GTA III.

sorry I'm not an expert when it comes to hardware but I understand that the ps2's cpu is way lower than 500mhz and gpu's at 150mhz, and it can flawlessly run gta 3 (and even better, san andreas)
but here in this android port dual core mobiles are being required for it to run? (not to mention android phones of today even the middle-range has a decent gpu)
isn't a 1ghz android phone(evo 4g) more than sufficient to run it?

The architecture used for a cpu/gpu is also of big impact. More megahertz is faster calculation. But some architectures make better calculations so they need less power to do the same.

Then there are other layers such as the OS and such which are of impact as well. You just cannot say mhz=mhz.

I've read somewhere on an article about the upcoming psp vita, to not count much about it's 4 core processor, because it's of ARM architecture. it says that even a dual core desktop cpu can best a quad core arm cpu.

so you mean to say that a dual core cpu equipped android phone is just a "minimum settings required" for a sandbox game like gta to run properly?

and am I right that the process for android os doesn't consume much resources? so if you have a 1ghz processor there's like 900mhz free power?

raw power on paper yes current phones SHOULD be faster...real world is a different story...any console is made with one purpose in mind and it is optimized up the butt for it....a phone...a smartphone non the less is made to handle MANY tasks at once...and as good as android is at shutting stuff down when needed there is still a TON of stuff running at all times...that cant be helped..also you gotta think...ps2 was one piece of hardware a-la iphone...android phones have all different architectures and CPUs/GPUs..this basically throws perfect optimization out the window...also the ps2 ran at a resolution of 640x480....our phones run at a higher res...OG evo for example ran 480x800...and the 3VO runs at 540x960...that will make a HUGE difference in performance...sorry for the rant lol
