gtalk chat settings

I'm trying to find out if there is a way to change the chat settings in gtalk app. Currently when chatting, the text looks like

them: 2
them: 4
me: 1
me: 3

trying to get it like
me: 1
them: 2
me: 3
them: 4

Is there a way to do this?

Are you saying they are out of order? They should appear in the order that they come in.

they come in the right order, but it groups my replies at the bottom and theirs at the top

that's odd. The last time I used it I remember it because in chronological order without grouping. Basically the same as the second way you described. Gtalk's settings are very limited. I'm not sure if different phones have different implementations.

I also had the same problem. But now I realised what is the reason for this.
Your phone clock may be set up at a different time than the actual time. So what happens is, Google Talk arranges chats as per the times they were written. To solve this problem all you have to do is reset your phone's clock to Automatic update in the settings and then you should have the chats in the chronological order.
