Although Google Talk Service is listed in Task Manager I cannot see an icon for it in Applications. Does this mean that Orange have disabled Gtalk and there is no way it can be used?

This icon not in your App Drawer?
It's just really IM client, no voice or video, unless you have 2.3.4, AFAIK??
