Root [GUIDE] Flashing Cyanogen 9 for Marvel & MarvelC

Caro332

Android Expert
I have noticed that quite a few people enjoy using Cyanogen and since I did not find any recent guide on flashing the ROM on AF, I thought I would give a simple guide.
Cyanogen 9 from modpunk is available for both Marvel & MarvelC.

This version of CM9 was created by modpunk. I do not take credit for any of this guide or for the rom. I am only creating a simple guide for you guys. If you want more details, please visit modpunk's thread:
[ROM] CyanogenMod 9.0.0-RC2 marvel/marvelc ALPHA7 [UPDATE: 2012-07-27] - xda-developers

Please proceed at your own risk. I do not take any responsability for what you do to your phone. If you brick your phone or encounter any problem, it is not my problem. But I would be happy to try and help out :D

Requirements:

1)Rooted phone
2)CM9 zip file Ensure you have downloaded the right rom version for your phone i.e. Mavel, MarvelC
3)Gapps zip file

PS: All files are available at the links mentioned at the bottom of the post

Flashing Cyanogen 9
  • Install both files on the root of your SD card
  • Boot into recovery
  • Wipe all data (Factory Reset)
  • Wipe Cache
  • Wipe Dalvik cache
  • flash rom
  • flash gapps
  • reboot
And voila!

Updating to Cyanogen 9

  • Install the rom file on the root of your SD card
  • Boot into recovery
  • Wipe Dalvik cache
  • flash rom
  • reboot
If after following these steps the play store isn't workig, reflash the gapps as well.
If you are using Link2SD
If you use Link2SD, please use the following steps:
Using Link2SD, you need to clear all caches from the app. Then reboot into recovery, install the ROM, install Gapps, then boot. Open Link2SD and menu > more > recreate mount scripts. Reboot.

When it boots, you might get a lot/a few force closes, why? Because the apps cannot find their .dex elements and therefore don't respond on boot. You need to go back into Link2SD, wait a minute, and press menu > more > link dalvik-cache files. Should take a while. When it's done, wait a minute. Reboot. (will take a long time as the .dex files link up again)

Do the same again, open Link2SD, menu > more > link dalvik-cache files. Reboot.
Keep doing this until all of them are linked, or until it says 0.00B linked. Then press menu > more > Relink all Application files, then press Clean up the Second Partition. Then Reboot.

Enjoy your new ROM!!!

Gapps: Goo.im Downloads - Browsing gapps

Bugs I noticed so far:

1) HD videos don't work and some animations that are integrated in some apps don't work either (example: BeWeather, Daily ab workout, daily butt workout {yeah I do like to keep in shape :) })
2) Turning the bluetooth on with the Power control doesn't work but if you use the button in the notification drawer or if you manually swtich it on in the options it works
3) Maildroid doesn't work. Keeps on Force closing
4) GPS doesn't work but Google map somehow seems to be working
5) Bar code may not look like it works but it actually does. Just be a but patient and it should be able to read it. I've used it a couple of times already

Actually I didn't follow your link2sd procedure. First flashed cm9, gapps thru cwm. Then installed Link2sd. That's all.

Is it necessary NOW to clear all caches and recreate mountscripts thru app....?

Well I guess that if it works great and the memory is not all messed up it's fine. There is no need to recreate mountscripts. I tried that way at first and it kept giving me an error especially everytime I would reboot

When you say 'Updating to CyanogenMod 9', do you mean updating from CM 7.2 ?

I just might do it....

I'm not sure that 'updating' might work properly since Modpunk recommends to install apps from market and not from backup. (if otherwise Caro has any other way).

But anyway CM9 really worth.

When I changed to CM9 I didn't know how to update so I just did a factory reset and used Titanium Backup to restore all my apps so I can't guarantee that it will work...

I flashed CM9 this evening but, on boot-up, got the message 'Unfortunately contacts has stopped'. At first I ignored this and went ahead with setting up my phone, quite excited, but when I tried to use the phone app I got the same message and I also got it when I tried to open contacts.

I went into recovery, did a full wipe and reflashed but the same thing happened.

I was prepared for this ROM falling short of full functionality, like video playback for example, but a phone has to be able to make calls or it can not be called a phone at all.

Couldn't find any fixes through googling...

Edit: I thought it may be because I was using a 'buggy' version of TWRP. so I reflashed CWM and had another go - the same thing happened :(

Back to reliable old CM 7.2, very disappointed.

Really bad luck for you !
Have you synced Google account properly on boot up?
Even if you reset and wipe cache, dalvik on cwm it will start from the scratch. (no need to flash CM9 again!)
I keep on trying many ROMs and instantly come back to CM9 very often. And I never get any of those errors.

Ok. May not be useful to you now since you are back to CM7.

Aww man sorry to hear that....

There are 2 ways:
either from rom manager(That's where I got it from) or the website I gave. Since wfs is an mdpi phone, you should be able to make it work with gapps-mdpi-20100930-signed.zip

Ultimately I got fed up with cm9 because it is lacking quite a bit of functionality like lack of gps and poor video playback and battery life. It gave me a tantalising glimpse of how nice ics is, though, and I'm looking forward to a fully functional version or a phone upgrade, whichever is sooner. FWIW my money's on the phone upgrade. Only 6 months or so to wait!

Yeah I reverted back to CM 7.2 for the same reasons. But they are now working on CM10 and it looks very sweet. A lot smoother thanks to project butter!!

unable to flash, getting a status 7 error..? Before i'm asked i did re-downloaded the zip atleast 3 times.

When exactly do you get the error? Can you give me the step by step that you are doing that is giving you the error? I might be able to help you better. Plus, is this a GSM phone you are using or CDMA?
