[GUIDE] [ROOT] Rooting Streamachine ST13 (Southern Telecom, Smartab)

May 30, 2016
Here are the final steps I took to root a Streamachine ST13 with Android 4.4.4.

This is mostly copied from http://androidforums.com/threads/guide-root-rooting-lg-leon-with-supersu.946345/

A big thanks to TerryG4 for the Android Forums post that finally worked and @Chainfire for SuperSU.

I'm happy the KingRoot application exists, but it doesn't tell you which exploit it uses, and it installs all of their bloatware which this and many posts are focused on removing.

From the play store:
Install Root Browser by JRummy Apps Inc
Install Root Checker Basic by joeykrim

Enable developer mode:
Settings -> About Tablet: Touch Build Number 7 times
Enable USB debugging
Settings -> Developer Options: Enable USB debugging
Enable non-play store apk's:
Settings -> Security: Enable Unknown Sources

Files (I found various un-labled versions of files, some worked and some didn't):
SuperSU v2.49: package: name='eu.chainfire.supersu' versionCode='249' versionName='2.49' platformBuildVersionName='5.0.1-1624448' (this version worked, others did not)
KingRoot v4.5.0: package: name='com.kingroot.kinguser' versionCode='120' versionName='4.5.0' platformBuildVersionName='4.1.2-1425332' (v4.0 failed to root the tablet, newer versions, 4.9.2, I didn't try again to see if the process would remove them but do root the tablet)
Busybox: Size 1,727,948 bytes.
Su: Size 133,472 bytes.
Use Android Development Bridge, ADB, to load 4 files. On windows with Android Studio 2.1, it's located in C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Android\sdk\platform-tools>. Save the 4 attached files to your adb directory, or modify the paths below.
cd C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Android\sdk\platform-tools>
adb push su /sdcard/Download
adb push busybox /sdcard/Download
adb push com.kingroot.kinguser-4.5.0-120-minAPI8.apk /sdcard/Download
adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/Download

On the tablet, start Root Browser and install KingRoot 4.5 from the download directory. Swipe through it's two splash screens, then click "Try It".

On the computer, start an adb shell, then elevate yourself, su:
adb shell
On the tablet, allow the permissions elevation.

On the computer:
mount -o remount,rw /system
cat /sdcard/Download/su >/system/xbin/daemonsu && chmod 0755 /system/xbin/daemonsu
cat /sdcard/Download/busybox >/system/xbin/busybox && chmod 0755 /system/xbin/busybox
daemonsu -d &

On the tablet, go back to the KingRoot app, go to settings (gear in upper right corner), Root Authorization Settings, and click Remove Root Permission. Ok/accept it's warnings and let it uninstall itself.

On the computer:
cat /sdcard/Download/su >/system/xbin/su && chmod 0755 /system/xbin/su
busybox chattr -ia /system/xbin/ku.sud
busybox chattr -ia /system/xbin/supolicy
rm /system/xbin/ku.sud
rm /system/xbin/supolicy
rm /system/bin/rt.sh
rm /system/bin/install-recovery.sh
rm /system/bin/start-ssh
busybox chattr -ia /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
busybox chattr -ia /system/etc/install-recovery.sh-ku.bak
rm /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
rm /system/etc/install-recovery.sh-ku.bak
rm /system/etc/install_recovery.sh
rm /system/usr/icu/icusuflag.conf
rm -rf /system/usr/iku
rm /system/kroot_*
rm /sdcard/kr-stock-conf
rm -rf /sdcard/Kingroot
rm -rf /data/data-lib/com.kingroot.RushRoot
rm -rf /data/data-lib/com.kingroot.kinguser
rm -rf /data/data-lib/king

On the tablet, install SuperSU from the apk on the tablet through Root Browser. Let SuperSU update itself, normal, and reboot.

Root check with Root Checker, telling SuperSU to allow Root Checker.

Run SuperSU, let it update itself, normal, and reboot.

Remove Purify.

Congratulations, you now have a rooted Streamachine ST13, and the root persists through reboots.

A couple of notes:
iRoot 3.0.0 failed.
TowelRoot failed.
KingOroot 3.1 did root the tablet, but I could not get it removed and SuperSU installed.
Super-Sume v6.7 did not work.
