Root [GUIDE] Rooting Your Ascend II

I tried rooting first, but I got errors with the zip i've seen. I don't have CWM Recovery though. How do I install that?

If the errors are from the Zip (NOT from the sdcard, my stock recovery couldn't find it), it's probably a problem with the Zip file. If you downloaded it from the phone, try downloading it from the computer instead (or make sure you have a strong WiFi signal during the download).

Instructions to install CWM are on the PlayfulDroidz wiki under "Huawei Ascend 2 -> ClockWorkMod Recovery" (not sure if I'm allowed to post links yet). The easiest way is to put your phone into fastboot (power off the phone then hold VOL UP + VOL DOWN + Power for ten seconds), connect it to the computer, then execute the installer script for your operating system. (the installer script will be in the Zip file you can download from the article)

I'm almost done getting the Muve update installed, so hopefully I can get the instructions posted.

Oh hurray! I really just want to get rid of the stupid carrier apps. I just wanted this device to develop apps on, but these stupid apps are driving me ape!

Yeah the errors were from the zip. "E: failed to verify whole-file signature.... E: signature verification failed Installation aborted" I'll try to download it again, but i've read that it is because it's running android 2.3.6 instead of 2.3.3

Be ready for some lag (unless you install a ROM that supports overclocking, the CPU runs at a mere 600mhz).

BTW, after installing the Muve update, mine was running Android 2.3.5 (not 2.3.6 or, as some sites seem to think, 2.3.7).

I got the same verification error you did in the stock recovery, but I managed to get it installed with some fiddling around in CWM. Here is the process that worked for me (please confirm if it works for you so others will know it works):

Root your Ascend 2 running the Muve update:
  1. Download CWM fastboot zip for the Ascend 2 over at PlayfulDroidz.
  2. Make sure that the update.zip for rooting your phone is on the root (top level) of your sdcard.
  3. Boot your phone into fastboot mode (poweroff, then hold Volume Down + Power for 10 seconds). Your phone should remain at the white screen with the Huawei logo.
  4. Connect your phone to your computer
  5. Unpack the CWM zip and run the install script for your OS (Mac OS X, Linux, or Windows). If it hangs, you may need to run it as your administrative user. The Windows script should open a window then close it if it succeeds.
  6. When the installer finishes, remove the battery then unplug the cable from the phone.
  7. Reinsert battery. Boot into recovery (Volume Up + Power for 10 seconds).
  8. Using the volume buttons, menu button (as the enter key), and back button, navigate to the Advanced menu.
  9. Wipe Dalvik Cache. Confirm.
  10. Fix Permissions.
  11. Return to the main menu and wipe cache, then confirm.
  12. Choose "apply update from sdcard" and confirm.
  13. On the main menu, choose "reboot system now".
  14. When the phone finishes booting (it will take awhile since it needs to rebuild the Dalvik Cache), check your menu to see if the "Superuser" icon appears. It will probably (but not definitely) be on the last page of your menu.

If these instructions work for you, please confirm it. It took me a few tries before I arrived at the above procedure.

docgnome,

i also have the huawai ascend II running 2.3.5 and it is not clear from what i have read if rooting the phone is possible with this version, do you know the answer to this? also, i see discussion about the zip file you need to load on the sd card of the phone to root the device but where is this file(s) obtained from?

Any suggestions would be helpful!
Thank you.

it looks like if you follow the steps outlined in post #29 you should be able to root

also you may be able to follow the guide here:

sdrawkcab25,

i have followed these instructions with the same results each time. pretty much the same results as another post above:

"E:failed to verify whole-file signature."
"E:signature verification failed. Installation aborted."

I did download the file a second time and tried re-installing quite a few times but same results. i am putting it on the SD card Unzipped per the instructions!!! Should i unzip this file before putting it on the sd card?

Thanks again!!
Tim.

First question, did you install CWM?

If you did, try verifying the MD5Sum of both your CWM zip and the rooting zip. The MD5Sum for CWM is posted on PlayfulDroidz. I made a MD5Sum of the zip I used and pasted it at the bottom of this post. Linux and Mac OS X have MD5Sum builtin to their command lines (just type "md5sum update.zip" without quotes, make sure to point it to where update.zip is) and GUI tools are available. Windows users can use MD5Summer, which is a GUI tool that can compare for you.

The last thing I recommend is to toggle off signature verification in CWM. In step 12 of my post, instead of choosing "Apply update from sdcard", choose "Install zip from sdcard", choose "Toggle signature verification", and finally "Apply /sdcard/update.zip" (without going back to main menu). If it still doesn't work, check the messages at the bottom -- if it says it enabled signature check, toggle it again until it disables it.

MD5Sum:
fc12c1fbd08ed80dc44ca1c0fe2c62fe update.zip

i also went to post 29 and was not able to find the cwm at playfuldroidz

It is there, I just checked. Go to the PlayfulDroidz wiki, choose "Huawei Ascend 2" in the list on the left, then look under "Misc". You'll see a link to the technical specs, then a link to CWM (actually spelled out instead of the abbreviation). It is quite easy to find if you look.

Hopefully I am allowed to post links now:

So I'm late to the thread, but at this point, these directions are sound.

The main issue is that the downloaded file, after downloading and unzipping, may need to be checked to ensure that the "update.app" is spelled correctly. In my case, I had to go in and rename the file from "updata.app" to "update.app". Just a little attention to detail help-seekers goes a long way... You can't expect everyone to hold your hand. Use a little common sense.

As a matter of fact, I would like to thank the posters and helpers who have assisted in this journey for me. No, I'm not a computer noob per-say (I actually am a VERY good Computer Technician...from what clients say), but I've NEVER rooted my Android phone...and you guys have made this a breeze...

Appreciate it.

P.S. - Yes, I've been confused in the past, but really it was my own anxiety at "bricking" my phone as many have worried. Not anymore. The Huawei Ascend 2 just does not offer enough memory (combined with too many useless programs that I can't simply get rid of) for me to worry about that any longer. Take off the training wheels, folks...get busy riding!

P.P.S. - Sorry if I've offended anyone...but sometimes, a dose of reality is what many of us need to get our minds together...

Live well, all!

P.P.P.S. - If anyone needs the Huawei stock ROM, I would be more than happy to provide. I honestly ended up running the download in a virtual machine to ensure that the site providing the file was not masking a virus...even though Microsoft Security Essentials ensured the validity... So yeah, the file has been tested for viruses. Either send me a private message or post your requests directly in the thread...

P.P.P.P.S. - Since this is my first post in androidforums, I just realized (as I was about to submit this post) that I can upload files. I'll upload the ROM here if space allows.

4- don't open the zip that you have just downloaded, place the entire zip on the main "menu" (root) of your sd card.

When you say this, do you mean the very root of the card (/...)

or the one folder called "root"?

Thanks in advance. :) :handkiss:

Definitely the root: "/"

That should get you where you need to go. Don't forget to check the name of the file to ensure it is "update.app"

The Update.zip file should be extracted. You'll end up with a dload folder and the file "update.app" ...jusy make sure it's labeled "update.app" and not "updata.app" (the download I had was "updata.app"...just a simple rename and the directions listed above work flawlessly.

Hi, this is my first post in this forum but often come here for help on other things. I have a problem when i try rooting my A2. I've read the whole tread here and I still can't root my A2, i believe i got everything right. I flashed back to 2.3.3 from the muve 2.3.5 and then downloaded the zip file on the first step of this thread, i didn't touch the file just copied it to the SD card. Followed the instructions exactly as it says but whenever i'm at the "Android system recovery" and go into "apply update from sdcard" it gives me "E:failed to mount /sdcard (no such file or directory)" no matter how many times i try. I'm almost sure the zip file isn't the problem because i've downloaded it from 3 different sources and it gives me the same error every time D:......the sd card works fine, i can transfer music, pics, vids and diff files in and out so formatting it like BlastGT1 mentioned might be pointless?? i also tryed a different sd card and the same problem occured...T.T plz someone point me to the right direction or let me know what the problem might be :(....should i update back to 2.3.5 and try rooting from there? if so, how do i root my A2 at that version. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR MUCH APPRECIATED HELP :)

Re-read the directions...

You have to unzip the dl'd zip file and place only the dload folder in the root of the sd card.

(I use 7-Zip as my archiver: 7-Zip)

The Huawei Ascend 2 has been a lot easier to root than my former MyTouch 3G.

The directions on this page are the directions that I followed to root my H-A2...work flawlessly...

no i was right bro...you don't have to unzip anything. i think your talking about the restoring the ascend back to stock, there you do have to unzip the folder but here you don't have to. Step #4 of this guide says "don't open the zip that you have just downloaded, place the entire zip on the main "menu" (root) of your sd card." my problem was that both of the SD cards i was using were too big?? they were both 16 and 8 GB....i used a 4gb sd card and VIOLA! it worked

You were absolutely right... Sorry about that...

Since you're at this stage, are you planning to upgrade back to 2.3.5 after you root it?
