GV for VOIP on Android

Newbie
Hi, all,

I have read the VOIP threads. Some success and not so much success.

I really want to make this work.

Walked into WM and bought an Exhibit II with the now-famous T-Mo 5GB at 4G speeds + 100 minutes plan.

My "set up":
- a GV number
- a rooted and debloated Samsung Exhibit II. No email accounts setup, no social media, nothing that could be using data, besides the official GV app for texting
- T-Mo 4G. Coverage is decent, 2-3 bars everywhere, but even at 4 bars speeds are mainly between 1.5 and 4Mbps. In some areas and being still it gets to 8Mbps.

Tried SIPDroid and CSIPSimple with pbxes.org set up for GV. Over cellular data, none are usable. Period. I frustrate my callees terribly.

WIFI with Groove IP is flawless and with SIPDroid and CSIPSimple almost flawless. Haven't bought Groove IP for cellular data.

My question doesn't have to do with what setup you are running (even though I DO want to know your setup and rate of success), as much as to how VOIP over cellular data works... or doesn't work.

In another thread a poster was saying "SIPDroid still relies on Google Voice." What apps/services don't and why is relying on GV bad? I am willing to pay a few extra dollars a month for VOIP to be reliable, as long as I can use my number that I've had for years and just recently ported to GV. Another or the same poster was saying these clients don't handle packet loss well. What/who does?

Does the phone hardware matter? Would a different phone with a better radio do better? Some Exhibit II users are fairly satisfied from what I've read.

When driving, is it bouncing from tower to tower that causes the problems? Today in front of my house, standing still, with one 4G bar and top speed test of 1.2Mpbs, using SIPDroid was almost perfect for a 6-minute conversation. One single short hiccup.

Thank you!

well, I'll update myself.

I have tried Talkatone, too, since it seems they do transcoding on their servers. A bit better, but not quite usable.

On an AT&T iPhone 4 Talkatone performed quite a bit better.

I've had good WiFi call-quality with SIPDroid+PBXes+GV and GrooveIP-Lite. I only tried 3G with SIPdroid once or twice, and it was OK. But my guess is that your 4G call quality issues are due to the greatly-fluctuating 4G latency (not necessarily the 4G speed) and therefore the call quality issues can't be solved through different apps, phone-hardware, or PBXes. (Latency can be affected by the current network traffic, as well as signal strength. And I would think that the cell companies haven't spent much time improving tower-to-tower handoff-latency for data since they're not motivated to help us utilize VOIP and thereby pay them less money for cheaper plans with fewer voice minutes.) The next time that you get a poor 3G voice connection, you could check your 4G connection's suitability for calls, with a test like THIS one.

Would you please tell me how to setup CSIP Simple with PBXes.org? I have a valid PBXes.org account that I was using with SIPDroid. But I don't like SIPDroid's user interface, so I'm installed CSIPSimple and tried to get it to work with my PBXes.org account, but it always fails to register. It usually says (depending on what I put in for the account info) "Error while registering- Request Timeout", or "Error while registering- Unauthorized". I've tried entering different user-names like:
mypbxesusername
mypbxesusername@pbxes.org
mypbxesusername-200
mygmailusername

I'm sure that my PBXes.org password is entered correctly.

Would you please tell me the exact settings that I'd need to use?
