Help Hand set unlock code unknown

Hi folks, I have in my hand an Orange san francisco purchased for next to nothing from ebay with a backlight only LCD screen. no display.

I have replaced the screen and the phone turns on, everything seems to work EXCEPT! the hand set is locked the seller cannot remember the code to unlock.

I have searched and searched but everything I find about "unlocking" is to do with using it for other providers than Orange, this is not my problem, I need to just get into the phone in the first place.

I cannot enter engineering codes as the displayed keyboard does not have # or* available.

I am a total noobie and have no idea what to do to get in.

Help please.
 
With a bit of lateral thinking I searched for "swipe", as I know you can swipe a pattern to lock the phone, this led me to getting the phone reset and up and running!
So well done this forum, the answers are out there you just need to know what question to ask.

Now off to see if I can mess up rooting it.....
 
Phone rooted, cyanogenmod 7 installed and working.

Next problem no android market or google play......
I am off to see what to do, but if you know what to do please let me know.
 
After much mucking about I have downloaded google play 3.9.16 .APK onto my computer from here.
com.android.vending_3.9.16.apk | by Android Police for Generic Device

It is now sitting on my computer, is it as simple as copying the file to the SD on the phone, long press on the icon then choose instal?

I will keep looking around the forums for the answer but if anyone feels they can chip in and help please feel free......

I don't think I have ever found such a quiet corner of the web than here in san francisco!:confused:
