I like to make calls while riding my bike to and from work but when I hold down the mic button, i am told by Voice that I have to unlock the phone.
To unlock the phone I have to stop, take the phone out of its case and unlock it.
Is there a way that I can at least make calls without unlocking the phone.

Put the phone in car mode, this will allow you to tap one on screen button to dial hands free.

This still requires me to stop and take my phone out of my bag or pocket to tap it.

Have you tried using a Bluetooth headset, you should find tapping on the call button on it should allow you to dial hands-free.

I imagine the one on the headset provided with the phone.

Yes I am using the earbuds that cam with the phone and I hold the stop/pause button down until I get Voice, which instructs me to unlock the phone before it will respond to my request to make a call.
I have not tried bluetooth however suspect the result will be the same as this seems to be a security feature which I would like to turn off somehow??

That is weird. Have you tried asking "ok Google , unlock phone"? I also have seen settings within apps that do override phone lock while in use. Tune-in radio I believe offers such an option.

I use both an Era by Jawbone and a Jawbone Icon HD and am able to hold the talk button to prompt the voice dialing while the phone is locked. I had this same issue with my GS4 and that was because the GS4 uses the "Siri" like app. This phone uses native voice dialing (which is what comes with Vanilla Android) and that app is allowed to bypass the lockscreen.
