Hanging emulator

Hi,
I guess I must be doing something wrong here.
I have VM player running virtual ubuntu with Android SDK and NDK (gingerbread). I have written a sample app with jni that calls native code.
I can see upon compilation using eclipse that the sample app's apk is getting created.
But when I try to run this app from emulator I get the message
[2011-08-09 10:20:03 - JNIproj] emulator-5554 disconnected! Cancelling 'com.mamlambo.sample.ndk1.AndroidNDK1SampleActivity activity launch'!

The emulator launches but home screen fails to show up. Instead what I see is a blank black screen.
After this, when I try to close the emulator, it doesnt close.
I'm then forced to shutdown and restart vmplayer..as nothing else helps.
Is there something seriously wrong ? Or is this usual?
I'm pretty much new to programming with JNI.

Hope to get some replies!
cheers,
Mable
