Hangout question, please help

Hey what's up everyone? I'm new here so first off hello.

I have a Samsung galaxy note 3 and love it so far. I currently have Verizon service but due to me being out of work, my service is soon to be turned off.

So my question is can I use the Google hangouts app to send texts via wifi after my service is disconnected, just like other apps (like textplus) allow? If I can use hangouts to send texts via wifi without cell service will they come from my same phone number or do I need to use a google voice number to use hangouts without cell service (I know I can port my cell number to Google voice and make it my google voice number as well)?

Or will I only be able to send hangout messages to people that have hangouts on their phones, using their email addreses?

I have a textplus account and know that without cell phone service I can send and recieve texts via wifi, but they get sent from my textplus number which is different from my cell number.

Welcome Splinter :D

When your service is disconnected, you will lose access to your cell number - so anything that relies upon that number will fail.

If textplus uses a separate number, it should continue to work fine over Wifi. Similarly, you can use Hangouts to send/received texts using your Google Voice number.

You should also be able to port your cell number to Google Voice as well, but you'll want to make sure to start that process before your service gets disconnected.

I think you'll only be able to use Hangouts as an IM app meaning you can only message people who have it installed
Sorry mate

I've sent sms for years from iChat, and no cellular service. Same thing from AIM.

The other person has a phone, received messages and could reply to them.

In this case, it's the same thing, except that the sending id would be the Google Voice number.

And the OP can't get a Google Voice number.

If it looks and acts like sms, that's what it is. This is just Google's version of a very old song.
